Cara Delevingne on the F1 grid

So I will start by saying that I know nothing about Formula 1. But I’ve seen this story flying around about Cara Delevingne https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/formula-1/cara-delevingne-martin-brundle-interview-30426931.amp

So The interviewer approached her on the grid, asked if she could have a quick chat - to which she said no - he then said people on the grid ‘had to talk’ to him because that’s the deal. She then said she can’t hear anything so he walked away and made a sarcastic comment about how it would have been an ‘extremely interesting chat’. She later tweeted to say she was advised by the F1 team not to talk, so she didn’t.

Is it just me or is this bloke just a raving misogynist?

He approached her, a neurodiverse young woman, asked her if she could chat, implying there was an option. Then told her she had to. And when she didn’t obey his commands he made a snippy comment that she isn’t interesting - so why approach her?! And when did it become OK to openly make women feel uncomfortable. I bet my bottom dollar he wouldn’t have responded such a way to a strapping 6’5” bloke.

Cara Delevingne hits back at Martin Brundle after remark over F1 grid snub

Martin Brundle endured his latest grid walk snub as model Cara Delevingne passed up the opportunity to speak to the Sky Sports commentator, but has clarified her reasons

Huge F1 fan here.

Martin Brundle is like that with everyone. I don't see misogyny here, just Martin being Martin.

HOWEVER, what IS hugely misogynistic is the way in which the media has seized upon it. Cara is far from the first celeb to clash with Martin, but I can guarantee there would have been no wider interest outside of F1 if she hadn't been female.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 12/07/2023 10:26

She was in the wrong and Brundle wasn't mysoginist. These celebs want to boost their profile and have VIP access and having a quick chat is part of the deal. Almost all of them are happy to do it. It's not a big commitment and they are getting a free ride.
You don't really need to state you know nothing about F1, because if you did you wouldn't have posted this.

Ohnanawhatsyourname · 12/07/2023 10:58

Ok this is long but want to explain why this is so frustrating for Brundle and F1 fans.

It’s a key part of F1 for the drivers, team managers, engineers etc to be media accessible during the racing season. You’ll hear these people being interviewed in the lead up to races and on the day.

Martin Brundle used to be a driver and then became a commentator. He’s fairly unbiased and has been a supporter for BLM, getting kids into F1 (of all backgrounds, not just the wealthy) and doesn’t love eg cheerleaders at events. He’s just straightforward and not a knob. I’ve been watching F1 for 15 years and any time he’s been on he’s always seemed mega decent. Never heard any scandals.

On the race day the paddock is opened up to some media and some team guests (including their sponsors). Some slebs are F1 fans and want to be there and actually have something to say/ ask, or others are just polite and will give a good attempt at pretending to know about F1 / wanting to learn about it, some clearly don’t care and just want to be there for the networking.

Brundle is a legend and gets to walk the paddock and interview people a bit ad hoc - he’s an old fixture, loved by all the teams, not a gatekeeping type at all. He’s not there to humiliate but part of F1 wanting to welcome new fans if they’re watching. Any F1 fan would LOVE to do a paddock walk. It’s just before the race, super interesting and rare access.

The problem is slebs wanting to be there for their socials/ networking, or any of the sponsors having slebs around for profile raising, shove them in the paddock in key areas, and dont tell Brundle beforehand who can speak and who can’t. I’d actually be surprised if any sponsor DID have those restrictions, I think it’s the sleb’s own PR team saying “no interviews”. Or sometimes a sleb will just be invited without those restrictions, want to network, whatever.

In any case - Brundle is and has always represented rare paddock access for fans. ANY invitee who doesn’t do basic research to know about his live interviews is a dunce and waste of an invite. It is interesting from a sleb gossip perspective as some are super nice and some won’t know who Brundle is and be very rude to him (not knowing it’s live… !). Anyway each time a bad response reflects very poorly on the sponsor, sleb and their team.

So I don’t blame Brundle for being exasperated at all. And I’m bored of any slebs being there for any reason and not knowing a key part of F1 media is the live paddock interviews for the fans. It’s a basic mistake and makes you look shitty.

Do you know who I mean? She isn’t jobless she acted consistently for at least a decade now in movies and TV shows.

And what do you mean ‘my assertion’? I haven’t guessed, it’s a fact that she has ADHD.

Appreciate the clarity about being on the bride but WRT Cara I don’t think she’s been rude in the past at all. I think she’s not as willing to be happy smiley bubbly interviewee and didn’t like being called grumpy because she didn’t fit the performant I’ve female stereotype

I think he reacted the way he did because she appeared to be acting like an asshole and breaking the rules. I’m sure he’d have said the same about a male supermodel who behaved the same way.

Exactly - Cara knew the rules - if she wasn't open to a chat then she shouldn't have been on the grid. She was very rude.

WeetabixTowels · 14/07/2023 13:00

I still think the sarcastic comment about what an interesting chat would have been was completely unnecessary. Why approach her if he thinks she’s gonna give a boring interview?

No means no. The male, pale, stale person should learn this.

MB is a total pita. I rarely miss a race and always mute this but as I hate it. I don't get the impression anyone likes speaking to him, it's uncomfortable viewing.

Also this is a massively homophobic comment @JogOn123

She's a jobless idiot who seems to get press attention by publicly snogging other women

Cara Delvigne is bisexual and has been in several female relationships. She’s not an attention seeker and that kind of ‘doing it for attention’ homophobic rhetoric is so fucking harmful.

As opposed to homophobes?

Also in what way is she a nepo baby? She’s the daughter of a property developer and a personal shopper.

At least get basic facts right if you’re gonna slate people

TBH @JogOn123 as well as homophobic you seem pretty misogynistic too. She’s a model therefore must have climbed the ranks due to mummy and daddy right

Oh my fucking god what did I just read?! You think lesbians only kiss to titillate men do you?

Are married straight couples who kiss in public doing it for attention? All of them?

She was in the paper a month or two ago allegedly smoking an illegal substance. She's had a tricky life when you read about her but no need for her behaviour.

Martin is a national treasure to anyone into the sport.

Really, a tricky life? How so. Didn't know she was ND. Apart from knowing she's had a very privileged life in terms of an incredibly wealthy property developer father and royal family connected mother, fuck tons of opportunities due to her family connections that aren't open to others.. She does say she "didn't enjoy growing up wealthy" though.

Smugglingcuddles · 14/07/2023 13:10

What was the point of her being on the grid anyway?

She knew the rules. I think her reputation of being a smug PITA is quite accurate.

Her maternal grandmother was Princess Margaret’s lady-in-waiting. Hardly a seat at the King’s side 🙄 are you saying only poor families should experience success? I’m sure it’s not her fault she has rich parents. But she’s sustained a modelling and acting career for a long time now so I don’t think we can say her personal shopper mother is getting her roles in Hollywood because of who she is.

Hi Poppy.

MrsJamin · 14/07/2023 13:17

She was rude, she shouldn't have been there if she wasn't interested in the sport!

jennywasafriendofmrbrightside · 14/07/2023 13:23

Don't stand on the Silverstone track right before the British F1 GP, clearly knowing nothing about the sport, and then act like a dick when someone with a microphone asks you about said sport - simple.

You want to watch without being bothered by the press? Keep off the grid.

MB's comment was because she clearly has no clue about F1 - if she did she would have commented. Garbage about someone telling her to say no to an interview.

Why start a thread when you know nothing about F1 🤦🏼‍♀️ if celebrities are on the grid, they have to talk. If they don't want to talk, then get off the grid. Its a choice they make.
