Just had an email from Next advertising little girls’ outfits for summer. It is headed Next has their outfit sorted.

No you don’t have their outfit sorted Next - you have her outfit sorted. You are talking about little girls, show some basic decency please.

I'm not sure what you mean? Was it a girls only next advertisement? Or boys and girls?

Dartmoorcheffy · 11/06/2023 12:48

Eh?

Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 12:49

Of all the marketing campaigns to pick out and be offended about…. This is probably up there is at least.

cuckyplunt · 11/06/2023 12:49

Oh good grief, come on out of the sun now, maybe go and lie down somewhere cool.!

ilovesooty · 11/06/2023 12:49

If they're talking about girls in the plural what's wrong with "their"?

It was for what they referred to as summer girlswear, no mention of boys.

You do know that “Their” is the plural pronoun for girls?

If it was girls in the plural then it would be talking about outfits, not a singular outfit. So, it is referring to a girl as they and not her.

I agree it’s not the worst, but I think this nonsense should be called out whenever it arises.

What?

Exactly this.

One girl = her clothes

A group of girls = their clothes.

Seems fine to me.

Swearwolf · 11/06/2023 12:57

Yeah I think you're reading too much into that. They (they!) are probably just referring to multiple girls.

Your little literally says outfits (plural)

ilovesooty · 11/06/2023 13:03

Your OP refers to girls' outfits. Plural.

MegaManic · 11/06/2023 13:04

I'd say it's possibly bad grammar rather than some pronoun shit although it reads fine to me.
They are clearly referring to multiple children getting an outfit. You'd really have to be looking for a problem to care about this.

BriarHare · 11/06/2023 13:05

Are you looking to be offended by this non-issue?

anon182 · 11/06/2023 13:11

I'd suggest if the "their" was an intentionally ambiguous pronoun then they wouldn't have referred to it as girlswear?

I work in digital/ecommerce and my guess is that it is a dynamic email with personalised content depending on what you've shopped previously. so customers buying boys wear would see different content.

hence the ambiguous "their"

ActDottie · 11/06/2023 13:19

Lol

RightOldMe · 11/06/2023 13:23

Professionally offended much? You're overreacting to a silly marketing lingo.

skippy67 · 11/06/2023 13:26

Blimey

MammaTo · 11/06/2023 13:51

So over reaching.

Hollyppp · 11/06/2023 14:11

This is weird and you have too much time
on your hands

PinkFrogss · 11/06/2023 14:13

Has the heat been getting to you OP?

MinnieEgg · 11/06/2023 14:18

Their business would go into administration if they only had an outfit sorted for one little girl.

YellowDots · 11/06/2023 14:20

Next clothing - leave our little girls alone please

Don't you mean 'leave our little girl alone'

OwlRightThen · 11/06/2023 14:30

It wasn't that long ago people were kicking off at the fact there were gendered clothes instead of pink being ok for boys and dinosaurs being ok for girls. Now it's frowned upon if they make it gender neuatral?
