Feminism: chat

Is Meghan, Duchess of Sussex really a feminist?

I'm asking here because this is the feminist section and it's nothing to do with her title or husbands royalty.
She accepted a feminism award from a feminist icon (Gloria steinberg) for her feminist work.

I'm not interested in her stand against racism or any of her other projects, and don't want to muddy the waters with these questions.

So is she a feminist icon?

Yeah, you’re a GF and I’m done.

See ya.

Enjoy your flounce. The feminism board probably isn't the best place for someone who minimises a misogynistic insult as a "less then ideal response".

AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe · 22/05/2023 22:18

Yes she's a feminist, she has been most of her life. I think you're on the wrong board though and find the opening post itself to not be feminist at all. The nitpicking and constant attacks on Meghan are a perfect example of misogyny, the relentless vicious tearing apart a woman and everything she does, truly woman-hating and extremely depressing.

Good post @AnAngelAtMyTableWithMe

Well said. Do we need to wonder why this poster chose MM as her target? Probably not!

I think she has always used her platform for feminist causes.

But the platform itself is the very essence of patriarchy. Even though she's 'rejected' the royal family, things like wanting titles for the children and fighting to retain their enormous privilege doesn't scream 'feminist' to me.

So I'm on the fence.

I think this sums up my feelings too. She does seem committed to feminist sympathies and it does seem genuine. She's certainly not an air head but holding onto and confirming the patriarchal titles seems a bit off. I hope she can continue along a feminist path, because no matter what, if she is helping girls and women in impoverished countries realise their fullest potential, it can only be good.

No,she hunted down a rich, prominent man to marry so she could further her own career. Nothing feminist about that.

How did she "hunt" Harry down?

PerfectYear321 · 25/05/2023 22:53

If she considers herself a feminist then she is one. I don't know why she'd want to be associated with that movement though. Its awful these days

Rubychews · 25/05/2023 22:55

Anyone can say they are a feminist, everyone’s definition of a feminist is different. So, yeah sure she’s a feminist. I don’t know that everyone agrees with that though.

Bunbuns3 · 27/05/2023 14:56

Mmm. Can a woman that is desperate to marry, immediately changes her surname to his. Only wants to spend her husbands money and move into her husbands house that she has not contributed to, be called a feminist? I suppose in this day and age anything goes, however I very much suspect that MM subscribes to the same branch as feminism as my sil.

Sounds like you’ve completely misunderstood feminism if you think it involves bitching about other women for not being independent enough.

I think you've just displayed classic misogyny actually, dismissing her value and independent wealth as well as her life choices around family. Incredibly sexist comment.

Thought so! The new wave of feminist, is grab a man and literally live off them. Here is me thinking it used to mean the polar opposite.

BillyNighysWife · 27/05/2023 17:20

This is like listening to an argument among theologians about some abstract point of theology. Feminism is the modern day holy virtue.

There is absolutely no such thing as a checklist to establish what a feminist is. Everybody has their own individual idea about what it means and it differs according to different cultures and societies and over time so it’s a really silly point to argue.

This argument is simply a proxy for whether you like MM or not. Feminism is a 21st century virtue. If you argue MM is a feminist you are simply saying that you like her, and if think she isn’t then you don’t.

You are being completely ridiculous.
Clearly you have some

oops, posted too soon.
Clearly you have some issue with your SIL but I have no idea why you have decided this has any bearing on the nature of feminism.

MissTrip82 · 29/05/2023 05:16

Yes she’s a feminist.

Not every choice a feminist makes is a feminist one.

I’m astonished this is news to grown women.

Whenharrymetsmelly · 29/05/2023 05:23

Well she told the Royal Family, the Press and Britain to piss off so that's a pretty big power move. I'm sure most others would have just put up and shut up 🤷‍♀️

Haywirecity · 29/05/2023 05:37

Brumbrumbrumbrummie · 20/05/2023 18:41

This seems very harsh - she wrote an advertising company when she was a child to protest against gender roles
think it’s fair to say she has been a feminist for a long time

Really? I can't recall her ever mentioning that. 🙄

Haywirecity · 29/05/2023 05:47

Oh my god. She got the award because she worked with Gloria Steinem to get the Democrats elected and Gloria said she'd do whatever she could to help Meghan's career. She runs Ms Foundation so she gave Meghan an award. Thats how, awards work in the,US. Its not what you do, it's who you know. No one would even know anything about her getting the award except she put out a, statement to say the paparazzi chased her.
It's all just a PR move from her and Steinem's Ms Foundation awards. And her acceptance speech was just her usual meaningless word salad of the same old stories.
Admittedly, she's not a great actress but she's a woman with ambition who fell in love with a prince and she's wringing every bit of advancement from it that she can. Well, good for her. Harry gave her a leg up and now she's going for it. She's seen men do it in the entertainment industry for years, taking advantage of their position, or looks, or fame. She wants some of that for herself. What's wrong with that?

Shouldn't this thread be over in the general Feminism Chat section of FWR instead of here, where all the terfy stuff is supposed to be safely contained?

Pluvia · 29/05/2023 15:05

What a fool I am, I thought this was Sex and Gender. As you were.

cuckyplunt · 29/05/2023 15:06

Gawd, have you lot really got nothing better to do? It’s a beautiful day; go for a walk or something. Live your own lives instead of trying to vicariously live someone else’s,

She can't really win can she. I was impressed to hear she did this as a child. I also think she's a bit of a dick, but credit where credit is due. If she does anything good, she's criticised for it anyway. I can see why she left the country. It's basically bullying, even on these threads.
