Feminism: chat

Are there any feminist places that are good, that are more about women?

I’ve been trying to look feminist sites or otherwise online places that are supportive of women.
But they are hard to find.
Like this place is pretty slow and many/most are just about wives and mothers, I’m looking somewhere women are bit more progressive and support other women.
Who you can talk about life with, through feminist lense or not.
I don’t really care about reading is it feminist or not to take a man’s name or arguments about chores or studies of how much men vs women raise kids, I donmt understand what that has to do with anything.

Does anyone know any sites?
Reddit was pretty bad, Ovarit is horrible and not much happening here…

I don't quite get what you are looking for? MN is anything but slow🤷‍♀️

CantAskAnyoneElse · 13/03/2023 11:30

This feminist board is pretty slow.

aineoverseas · 13/03/2023 11:36

The Sex & Gender board is pretty busy if you're into those discussions.

CantAskAnyoneElse · 13/03/2023 11:42

Oh, no no.
I’ve lurked around there. Seems to be mostly filled with conservitive soccer moms, same reason I avoid Ovarit.
I don’t care to talk about how women are women because they have babies.

More about women’s lives or rights, but not via having husbands/kids, about being a wife/mother.

More forward and independent thinking.

Are you in the UK or America? I ask because of 'mom'.

If you're willing to give Reddit another go this subreddit is ok www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/

I mean...if you think that, you clearly haven't lurked on the sex and gender boards!

I tend to agree with this. They're about as far from "soccer moms" as you can get.

It’s very much about hetero-kids-marriage-parent oriented. The trans stuff may hide it a bit, but reading through it’s very convetional place.
Anything else and other lifestyles gets sneered down on, I don’t care for that.
It really does come off as highly conservative to me.

Just a thought.... start your own threads on the topics that you are interested in discussing. Ignore and don't reply to posters who you judge are conservative and conventional and only respond to those who fit your requirements. Then you will be making the place more how you want it to be.

I often see threads being started or posts being made by people complaining about what's being discussed or not discussed and yet I rarely see those posters start a discussion about their preferred topic.

Be the change!

I’m a 23 year old childless socialist and I feel very at home there but fair enough.

If you read the current ’faux feminism’ thread, you’ll see exactly what I mean.
I think womens lives, worth, issues, rights go so far beyond than just being married to men and having kids.
Women are worth so much more than that.

OP posts:
Artisticpaint · 13/03/2023 14:38

I would have thought that is the main message that you get from this site

RoseslnTheHospital · 13/03/2023 14:39

So... start a thread on your preferred topic, or start to discuss it here...

So go over there and tell them that then.

You haven't even made a comment on that thread or tried to steer the discussion in the way you would like it to go.

Instead you start a thread whining about how other women aren't discussing things the way you want them to.

I agree with @RoseslnTheHospital

I haven't read that thread. But I'm a bit bemused you expect women who you've written off as conservative soccer moms to engage with you.

MyBloodyBrother · 13/03/2023 14:44

I’ve been on MN for years and it certainly isn’t conservative by any means. It does seem to be more middle class women here than in places like Netmums but there’s still a huge variation. It’s called Mumsnet so there is obviously lots of discussion about motherhood. I have never seen anything on the feminism board (apart from the occasional faux naïve troll) suggesting heteronormativity should be promoted.

Personally, apart from here I’ve found Twitter to be a great place for such discussions. Follow a few feminists who interest you and get involved in discussions with their followers.

Magenta82 · 13/03/2023 14:49

It doesn't seem particularly feminist to stage off women and dismiss their lives and concerns.

Why not start threads on topics you are interested in and see what happens, it would be a more positive approach than your current one.

Isn't TwoXChromosomes modded by men?

There's a saying here - can't remember it exactly.

'Came for the babies, stayed for the feminism.'

So quite a lot of MN is a self selecting bunch. If it's not for you - good luck with your search and come back and let us know how you got on.

I'm only a 'soccer mom' on Saturday between 10 and 11. I have time to try other sites. Grin

That thread is making the exact opposite complaint to yours, though: that thread's OP says that they are turned off by feminism (and by MN) because it's not focused enough on (presumably) heterosexual romance, family, having children, motherhood, etc.

What kinds of content do YOU want to see, specifically?

@AbsolutePixels yes - most of reddit is modded by men and any women who are still tolerated and speak up get a load of penii pics in their mod queues.

They are probably female penises.

AbsolutePixels · 13/03/2023 20:19

They are probably female penises. Doubtless.

Reddit is run by an unpaid army of hairy-handed basement-dwelling troglodytes. Many also stunning and brave.

turbonerd · 13/03/2023 20:57

Ok I will bite.
What kind of stuff do you find important for women’s lives?

ThreeFeetTall · 13/03/2023 21:30

I don't really understand- you want to talk about life but dont want to talk about chores or raising kids? That is not probably relevant to lots (most?) people. But it is relevant to me as the mother of two young children. So I am going to talk about it.

The personal is political.
