Jeremy Clarkson article about Meghan

I know this isn't The Royal Family board. I'm not analysing Meghan as I don't know her and she will have no affect on my life. I have become interested in the press and public reaction to her as it feels misogynistic which obviously does affect me.

This is from Jeremy Clarkson today. I feel like is the dark she's and we're hunting witches again.

Meghan, though, is a different story. I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level. At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her. Everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.”

I dont undersatnd the ‘satire’ defence

Clarkson’s shtick is to provide the most outrageous reactionary take when he is asked to provide one.

He did it a couple of years ago on TV too, he was asked something along the lines of what should happen to striking workers and replied “they should be killed, in front of their children”. This also generated days on end of outraged headlines.

The question we should be asking is why editors are so desperate to generate outrage.

borntobequiet · 18/12/2022 15:22

Yes, it’s clearly satire and very much his style (which I don’t admire, BTW).

OliverBabish · 18/12/2022 15:35

The satire defence is just attempting to shine a shit. “I wrote hateful, misogynistic bile for a living but let’s call it edgy and irreverent”

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/12/2022 15:51

I’ve also complained. This is disgusting. I do not like Meghan much. However, I do not wish any harm to come to her and she deserves to be safe. Fuming. I am really disappointed that Camilla invited him and Piers to her private function.

Information you need to complain:

Title: One day, Harold the glove puppet will tell the truth about A Woman Talking B***ks

Publication: The Sun

Date: 16 Dec 2022

Link: www.thesun.co.uk/news/20782114/harry-meghan-netflix-series-truth/

i ticked both discrimination (misogyny) and harassment (ongoing by British tabloid press). You get to explain in the next box.

Thank you!

hellycat · 18/12/2022 15:55

I don't think the press were as savage to Meghan as they were to Fergie, for instance - she got hammered back in the day. But this has shocked me, and if Meghan and Harry were to complain about this article, any reasonable person would have to support them, I think. No matter what you may think about their behaviour - this is unwarranted. Frightening to see how many readers of the Mail Online article about it are applauding Clarkson in the Comments section. Very ugly misogyny - an overused word these days, but fully justified here.

CorporateBull · 18/12/2022 15:58

This isn’t satire though. Because Clarkson has a long history of behaving in an odious way. Satire uses extreme opinions to highlight corruption/stupidity/ignorance - but if you are the person who has been repeatedly pulled up for behaving badly yourself it’s hard to claim that you are not just being genuine in what you say.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/12/2022 16:03

Revolting

His daughter has come out in support of Meghan and said she doesn’t agree with her dad

JolieJ · 18/12/2022 16:08

It is a horrifying article, also complained

IDontWantToBeAPie · 18/12/2022 16:13

He met her once and she didn't think he was a big impressive deal so he hates her. Classic.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 18/12/2022 16:14

Oh maybe that was Piers Brosnan actually

anyolddinosaur · 18/12/2022 16:31

Clarkson is a piece of shit, he'd probably like to throw himself at Megan. I dislike the whining victim culture, but this is plain offensive mysogyny for the sake of it.

AnnieP1 · 18/12/2022 16:36

As mentioned by other posters please please complain to IPSO about this vile comment by Clarkson. Surely he should be prosecuted.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 18/12/2022 16:37

IDontWantToBeAPie · 18/12/2022 16:14

Oh maybe that was Piers Brosnan actually

Piers Morgan, surely?

Comedycook · 18/12/2022 16:38

It's really disgusting beyond words...I'm appalled. I hope this is the last we hear of him. I don't want to read any of what he writes or see him on the television again. The imagery is just vile, sadistic, sick on so many levels.

Soothsayer1 · 18/12/2022 17:03

picklemewalnuts · 18/12/2022 14:37

I've just told DH that I'm boycotting Clarkson. I read the passage, he agreed it 'wasn't very nice'. I pointed out that he equated Nicola (who I don't like) with a serial killer and said that Meghan was worse than both. Again, 'not very nice'. I explained that the misogyny was off the scale and that if another group were referenced in that way, that targeting women and girls is so ubiquitous ...

and suddenly he noticed that it was three women being smeared, and that the desired punishment was actually hugely sexist as well.

He really didn't see it until it was elaborated.

I wonder why? does his brain just go 'there's a bloke who likes cars and the pub therefore anything he does must be fine' and he screens out the actual content before it gets properly processed?

MargaretMead · 18/12/2022 17:08

It’s a distraction from the government’s total mismanagement. It’s an ‘oh look over there’ to distract from the pensioners shivering in their homes and loved ones dying whilst waiting for an ambulance.

Yes it’s definitely horrible and misogynistic, also unfunny, seeking to humiliate and demonise. Also unfair on Nicola Sturgeon to be compared to Rose West, a serial killer convicted of torture and murder.

RosettaStormer · 18/12/2022 17:09

I won’t be watching the new series if his farm programme, that’s for sure.

CPL593H · 18/12/2022 17:11

Not a fan of Meghan or Harry (who seems to get much more of a pass) but I absolutely recoiled when I read that. I have no doubt that there have been racist threats against her and a rich, well educated man with a platform stoking them in the name of "humour" and "opinion" is despicable.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 18/12/2022 17:14

He's an utterly nasty piece of work. Racist, misogynist and classist. I loved Kathy Burke's response to his claim that everyone his age thinks like him - now she has class.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 18/12/2022 17:15

This is the same man who routinely "joked" about truck drivers murdering prostitutes on Top Gear. He has form for being a seriously unpleasant man.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 18/12/2022 17:28

Those claiming it's satire need to give their head a wobble. Satire is generally aimed at those in power, it should punch up, take the piss out of what powerful figures are doing, make people think. This is just an extremely privileged man saying sick, nasty things about an easy target for a cheap laugh. Meghan may be privileged in many ways, but she is an easy target because she has been the subject of so much misogyny and racism already.

Beefcurtains79 · 18/12/2022 17:29

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/12/2022 15:51

It wasn’t Camilla’s lunch or function! This has been pointed out several times on this thread.
It was a lunch thrown by Fortnum and Mason, she was just an attendee- along with Clarkson and Morgan.

DunkingMyDonuts · 18/12/2022 17:41

He has done more for M and H cause than any Netflix series could have.

People FINALLY see what happens when people allow apparently small acts of misogyny and racism to be silently condoned. Vile people get viler and "braver" and this is the result.

MargaretMead · 18/12/2022 17:45

Agree with you @AreOttersJustWetCats

Imagine if Clarkson had written the same words about a privileged male of colour instead...

“Rishi Sunak, though, is a different story. I hate him. Not like I hate Boris Johnson or Ian Huntley.
I hate him on a cellular level. At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when he is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at him. Everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.”

It still reads like a racist attack on a person of colour, even when redirected at someone in a position of power. It’s definitely not satire, it’s a horrible piece to write about another human being, whoever they are, however much you may disagree with their behaviour or politics.
