Men viewing all women as potential sex workers

In uni, guys in my class (my choice of optional modules had classes that were sadly even more male-dominated in an already male-dominated course) would blatantly scroll through nudes on Reddit in full view of everyone during the lecture and make 'fuckability' spreadsheets complete with ratings and how much they'd 'pay' for nudes of women from my school.

Employment prospects was an especially hot topic at the height of COVID but anytime a female student posted about her worries in the school-specific sub, her concerns would be dismissed with, 'women can do OnlyFans, I don't see the issue here' or something along those lines.

I'm currently doing my internship at a fairly prestigious firm and at lunch the other day someone was talking about this news article that showed up on his Apple News feed a while back, and the main takeaway he got (others agreed with him) was that the best thing a woman can do for her life 'if she is not stupid' is to open an OF page the day she can and 'milk her youth because it fades fast'.

I'm in a regional programming group on Discord. There's an 'entertainment' section where they discuss movies and content creators on YouTube and when an actress or female content creator turns 18 or when her viewership starts declining (it doesn't matter what content she does) there's always this 'joke' as to when she's going to start selling nudes.

Is this just how women are viewed these days? I am so sick of it and it never seems to fucking stop. In fact, it actually seems to be getting worse as some of the boys in my sister's classes almost seem to believe that it's a given that the girls will at least do OF on the side when they're older! Jesus wept.

Depressing. How did things go backwards so fast?

floppybit · 11/07/2022 01:19

Oh god this is very depressing to hear

FannyCann · 11/07/2022 01:26

Hi Op. I'm posting a link to the Nordic Model Now university handbook which they produced in response to the disgraceful University of Leicester student sex work tool kit.
In it they give details of webcam and only fans work, explaining the risks and how damaging it is. You may find useful information there to use as a counter argument when these discussions arise.

There is much more information on the NMN website.

God, that's awful.

I don't even know where to begin responding to all that :(

Ravenclawdropout · 11/07/2022 01:35

But isn't it the logical outcome of "freedom" and claiming everyone can do what they want between consenting adults? I don't agree with any of it but my morality is very different.
The irony is its MEN who are struggling to find sexual partners in this hyper sexual world. The % of men who aren't in a relationship or having sex has tripled. If you pretend sex is just a commodity and "work" and divorce it from procreation men have no incentive to build a relationship. Late stage capitalism combined with the sexual revolution is destroying communities, families and the ability of men and women to even relate in healthy ways.

theclangersarecoming · 11/07/2022 01:35

It’s fucking grim as hell, but no doubt MargaritaPie et al will be along shortly to tell us how empowering and lucrative OnlyFans and “sexwork” is.

Watchthesunrise · 11/07/2022 01:48

Uni handbook posted above was interesting. Albeit wordy and long.

Male culture is awful right now.

Thanks for this link, FannyCann. This is valuable and should be publicised to all universities.

Universities grooming and pimping teenaged women, though. Would you have believed that? Have they any idea how they have demeaned themselves?

OtterlyRidiculous · 11/07/2022 11:41

Will take a look at the link, thanks.

This sort of thinking is not uncommon, sadly. At my sister's school (she's in yr 11), sex work is viewed positively and is sort of seen as the future for women. Oppose it and you'd be seen as prudish or conservative or even insecure.

Recently, one of the popular senior girls turned 18 and her Instagram was flooded with 'OF when?', 'you'd be a millionaire on OF' and other similar crap. Looked through her account and it's all just pictures of her playing lacrosse and pictures of her and her dog ffs so it's not as if it's a 'sexual' account (terrible descriptor but you know what I mean) in the first place.

It's all so grim.

the world wide web has not been a universally benign introduction to the lives of women.

TruthHertz · 11/07/2022 19:16

Where the hell are you studying where most men are like this? Defo not the norm.

A Mum or aunt on aibu wrote aboit a similar experience by s young woman who had studied a stem, I think, subject; when she posted on sm asking if anyone was aware of job opportunities in their field, lots of her ex classmates, all male, responded with suggestions of only fans etc. It was jokey but not.

Presumably they wouldn't have done the same to a young Jan asking that question. "Loads of money to be made in the gay "escort" business mate, forget about your stem degree".

Has anyone heard the expression "the oldest trade in the world"? Nothing to do with current affairs. Let's be honest, women exploit their sexuality, men exploit their alpha drive. When they meet: happiness. When they don't: feminism, male chauvinism, the favourite clubs of the misfits. Wake up village girl, it's always been there!

Vomit.
Actually making stone tools is the oldest profession. And even if it was the oldest profession, it doesn’t mean we have to carry on living in the dark ages.

GeorgeCat1 · 12/07/2022 00:30

Your office is very different to mine. I'd be very surprised to hear anything like this.

Namenic · 12/07/2022 00:43

Um - I’m pretty sure this would be reportable. Whether you decide to report it or not, depends on the firm you are working at. If anyone commented like this on LinkedIn, they would be probably be shunned by recruiters.

oh wow my impassioned response (agreeing with you OP) is so shocking it's been hidden!

Anyway, you're right. What to do about it I don't know.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/07/2022 00:55

It's the biggest con in the so called progressive movement.

Not only have men persuaded young women to be complicit in their own oppression but also managed to convince them that it is somehow freeing and powerful for them.

Maybe men only seeing a women's worth as how 'fuckable' she is isn't new, but the way social media is now and the constant, instant access to every type of porn, they have no idea how to form actual real life relationships because they don't see women as people, just as objects to use.

skimper · 12/07/2022 01:13

Doubt there's a woman alive who has gone a week without being affected by sexism somehow. It's horrible. I think there's certain things we can change with how we are with kids, young girls etc, need to educate boys earlier. But not an excuse how bad it still is

Out of interest have you read the Uni of L's sex work tool kit?

le.ac.uk/-/media/uol/docs/offices/edi/student-sex-work-toolkit-final-december-2020.pdf

It's facts about sexwork, explaining what is and isn't illegal, support available for sexworker students within the Uni and in general. Information which would be useful for students who happen to be sexworkers to know. I don't find any of this "disgraceful" and there's certainly nothing in there that would "encourage" anyone to go into sexwork.

Durham University, one of the world's leading Universities, have also responded to criticism re giving staff and students training on how to support student sexworkers and dealing with the harmful stigma that comes with sexwork (which of course, some tabloids have twisted and misinterpreted as "University offers training for students to become prostitutes").

web.archive.org/web/20211205230640/www.durham.ac.uk/about-us/notices/sex-worker-support/

“We make no apologies for working to ensure that Durham is a safe environment for all of our students and staff. We are extremely disappointed by the way the intentions for, and content of, this session have been misinterpreted.”

How right this is, it is men who are struggling to find partners and sex. It doesn't make sense, some women complain about the patriarchy but on the other hand they want a partner who's competent and in a high up position in the hierarchy. I've never understood this hypocrisy of left wing feminists.
