The gushing obituary for a man who murdered the mother of his children

Clymene · 10/05/2022 09:29

I am so angry about this.

This psychotic pig broke into his ex's house in the middle of the night and stabbed her to death while the children were in the house. And then hung himself in the garage.

Why? Because she was in a relationship with another man. Regan Tierney barely gets a mention in this fawning article which makes him sound like a paragon of virtue rather than a man who carried out a brutal murder in a jealous rage.

Those poor children.

I'm going to complain to the Press Association.

Or do you perhaps mean that his dad said something like: 'I always thought he'd make an amazing father but I was wrong' and 'When he was young, he wouldn't hurt a fly but as he grew up he turned into a man I didn't recognise'?

So you think the reporter is deliberately twisting his dad's words? Gosh

Thanks for pushing back on this kind of distortion in the media, @Clymene

Ironic.

it's the distortion in the media that is causing the problem.

Georgeskitchen · 10/05/2022 18:01

Don't blame the MEN. They are duty-bound to report what was said at the coroners inquest and that it what they did

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 10/05/2022 18:04

I dont think we can blame the father.

I blame tne media.

But the police would have also been there. They didn't quote them.

thank you for this thread. I agree that there are failures of journalism and by the coroner. Both show a bias towards excusing the behaviour an abusive man who should be accurately described as such. I have complained to iPso. Thank you for the thread and the link.

VintageGibbon · 10/05/2022 18:13

What's all this rubbish about him being 'destroyed'? She's the one who was destroyed. Imagine if all the women who post on MN about their husbands having affairs sneaked into the house and killed the men who'd been unfaithful. I wonder how they would be portrayed.

brookstar · 10/05/2022 19:01

Nobody is claiming that Patten isn't a scumbag of the highest order. but its very black and white thinking to think his family wont be affected. I highly doubt the dad was cheering him on as he murdered the mother of his grandchildren.

You'd be surprised.
When I lost my mum in almost identical circumstances his parents were at pains to point out that their darling son couldn't murder anyone and that it was a suicide pact, despite the evidence clearly stating that wasn't the case. The lack of self awareness was staggering.

Thankfully the coroner handled it far better than the one in this case.

rarge · 10/05/2022 19:13

You're totally right about the procedure @stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou, not sure why people are having a go. However, parents absolutely do defend vile men. I have no faith in the grandfather, having been in an abusive situation- family will turn a blind eye, and often go further and disparage the victim too. Parents can defend the Indefensible, though I hope that's not the case.

BoDerek · 10/05/2022 19:56

I so agree about the murderer’s and the victim’s photos being positioned side by side, I have always found this abhorrent. I remember Dunblane massacre and how the papers kept putting the murderer’s photo in the middle of a page of tiny children’s images. I find it sick. Those poor families having their beautiful children’s images forever entwined with that of the man who destroyed them.
I always think the main photo should be the victim and the perpetrator’s image should be much lower down. Keep the focus on the victim.

Because his first post was criticising me and saying the father is innocent and stupidly I got drawn in. I'm afraid he appears to be following me around at the moment. Sorry about that

I started this thread to criticise the reporting. I just don't believe the journalist twisted the words of the witnesses so that they said something entirely different to what the witnesses said. I do believe she engaged in very selective reporting and that was the basis of my IPSO complaint. I think this article is irresponsible, inaccurate and detrimental to the victim and her family.

I see what you're getting at. The article was definitely more focused on him, and they could've framed what was said differently - like by reinforcing the events that happened. It can come across the way you describe

Shannonpaigexx · 10/05/2022 22:41

His family will never, ever see the children again. I am Regans sister, myself and my partner have legal guardianship over my niece and nephew. I witnessed first hand the mental and physical abuse for 10 years. His family enabled it and thought it was ok. The article really is sickening to read, especially hearing the bullshit that spews out of their mouth. They constantly threaten my family because they aren’t allowed anywhere near the children and glorify a murderer. I promised Regan I would protect her children and I will do that until the end of time. She deserved to live, she deserved to be here. He broke in, killed her while she slept and then phoned myself and my 80 year old Grandad. I’ll never, ever forget it.

I am so very, very sorry about everything you have been out through. To lose your sister so brutally and then have to go through everything you have for the last 3 years must be unbearable. I send you and your family every strength. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to read how your sister's murderer is being portrayed as a poor victim.

I'm so glad Regan's children have you to protect and care for them.

oakleaffy · 11/05/2022 06:13

What an absolutely tragic case.
It seemed seeing a Facebook post of ''The new relationship'' pushed him over the edge into a murderous rage.

The ''Other man'' was lucky to have escaped.
Had he been there, It could have been a double murder.

''He let himself in via the garage, where he still had a key''

Change locks, if ever a relationship breaks down, just to be ''Safe''.

Ownedbymycats · 11/05/2022 06:34

What a powerful post, this sort of reporting and treatment needs called out every time. Well done to the op and condolences to the family. It's chilling to think this violence went on for 10 years, imagine living your life line that until your tormentor decides to murder you.

That is appalling.
Why did the article not mention the ongoing domestic violence over a decade ?

It really should have. It makes out that the murderer ''Snapped'' as a one off momentary lapse of reason after seeing a Facebook post.

Clearly this murderer had ''Form'' from what you say, yet that isn't mentioned in the article at all.

The article says he ''Let himself in'' while still having a key.

Inaccurate reporting.

So sorry for the loss of your Sister, what the children are going through must be beyond describable.
