Feminism: chat

So compared to Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown, Cameron, and May? Rated according to what? Let's presume progress for womens rights?
Johnson is last of a pretty poor show all round. Then you can add in the lack of integrity, ethics, the lying, the contempt for the general public, the cronyism, the self-focus, and so on...
@JC544D what's your opinion of Johnson, as a feminist yourself?

I'm going to say he's worse than Thatcher - and that's a huge thing for me to say, as a lifelong leftie who grew up in the 80s in family of trade unionists in the NE surrounded by mining communities. But however evil Thatcher was - and she was - she wouldn't, had Covid happened in her time, have attended booze fuelled parties in no.10 whilst the rest of the country was in lockdown. She just wouldn't.
I don't think any of them have a brilliant track record for women's rights, tbh. Blair probably did the most.

This. Word for word. My loathing of Thatcher knows no bounds and I think Johnson is just a lower quality person than her.

I would say bottom below Thatcher. At least she had beliefs and a vision for her governance even if I disagreed with them and worked hard at the job. Boris is in it purely for his own power trip and whatever personal gains he thinks he can make. He doesn't have any personal vision, just goes along with whatever he thinks will make him look popular.

@artisanbread
Absolutely this.

I agree. Whether you agree with what she believed or not, she said what she was going to do and she did it. Johnson is ineffectual, lazy and a criminal who has achieved nothing. In my opinion he is the worst prime minister in my lifetime.
MrsSaltshaker · 18/04/2022 18:33
Easily the worst. The fact that he's uttered something relatively sensible on the subject of women's rights and trans kids doesn't detract from his sheer awfulness - a liar, a misogynist (despite the above), corrupt, has trashed our reputation abroad, has brought the HoC to its lowest point...I could go on.
Suspect this qu bt the OP is an attempt to stir on this board tbh.

Greebo, it’s an inconvenient truth that Harold Wilson’s Labour government actually closed down more coal mines than Thatcher did. I would rate Thatcher in the top three prime ministers of the 20th century.
I’m old enough to remember the shit show that was Britain in the 70s pre Thatcher - the restrictive practices, the endless strikes, the stranglehold by the unions, the inefficient nationalised industries… she transformed Britain from its dying old heavy industries to a modern service economy, with an associated rise in living standards.

I'd put him last. He has no conviction, no principles. His response to Covid has been appalling.
He is completely correct about what a woman is. That doesn't make him a good politician. Just one who is being honest on that point.
Now ask people to rate Keir Starmer as a leader of the Labour Party and the Green leader as leader of the Greens.
The fact is they're all a bunch of opportunistic, unprincipled, charlatans who bear no resemblance to the founding principles of their parties.
Ganymedemoon · 18/04/2022 19:00
To me the worst would be between him and Thatcher. I think I would just put Boris at the bottom. I hated Thatcher and a lot of what she did but she never lied, or if she did no where near to the extent that Boris has done and for me that makes him far worse, you only lie if you know what you have done, are about to do is wrong otherwise why lie?
JaninaDuszejko · 18/04/2022 19:18
I find it quite depressing that when asked about such a dishonest, unprincipled, lazy freeloader who is the absolute epitome of white male privilege some posters have demonized Margaret Thatcher so much that they think she was worse than Boris Johnson. That is incredibly insulting to a principled polititian who was hard working, and believed in what she was doing to improve the country and achieved masses despite incredible prejudice against her because of her sex and class within her own party. I don't agree with everything she did but I know she would never have had a party at Downing Street the day before Prince Philip's funeral, she did not have lots of affairs, spouses and children, and she would not have repeatedly lied to parliament. And she understood the ambitions of the respectable working class far more than the over privilaged Johnson, Caneron and Blair.
