Female students are being injected now with date rape drugs in nightclubs

I won't post the Facebook post I saw because its on a forum but apparently there have been several reported incidents of students in Exeter nightclubs being injected in the back (not by people they are with) while out. The newspapers really need to get on this story and nightclubs who are reportedly batting back complaints saying that the women are just drunk need to deal with this criminality on their premises. We are not prey. Angry

@Kinneddar

So clearly my niece must have made it up and presumably injected herself with something just to try and add credibility to her story

I find it really disheartening that this of all forums is dismissing this. So much for 'I believe you'

I believe women. I don't believe random anonymous claims on the internet. I could tell you it happened to me. You have no proof it didn't. I have no proof it did.

What's really disheartening is how many women are prepared to limit their freedom on the basis of what they read on the internet.

So have any journalists done any actual research to find out if there is any actual hard evidence that this is actually happening or are they just reporting unsubstantiated Internet rumours?

I doubt they've had the time, since all the reports from around the country emerged simultaneously just a week ago, at least going by Twitter.

The stories of drink spiking and general sexual abuse/harassment on this Twitter thread are terrifying.

Most clubs are dire, university ones especially so. Cheap alcohol and young people away from home for the first time.

You have to be so careful with your drink, when it's crowded it's easy to lose your friends, they're dark, noisy, and disorientating, even without any alcohol.

I can't remember where it was but I recall an experiment where people went round putting harmless Skittles in people's bottles / glasses, just to demonstrate how easy it is to spike someone's drink.

The Twitter thread frames the needle attacks as another form of men wanting to harm and intimidate women - a much, much more likely reason for women being attacked with needles than trafficking/attempts to abduct.

If you want to abduct a woman, about the stupidest thing you can do is stick a needle in her in a crowded place, where she will probably have friends around her, and where there is CCTV everywhere. If you want to intimidate girls, however, a public attack that gets a huge amount of media attention is the perfect way to do it.

Absolutely no one doubts that the sexual harassment and abuse of young women is rife.

You have a long and credible posting history, @Kinneddar. So yes, I'm more likely to believe something happened to your niece as you've said here. However, the poster going on about a girl unable to use her arms and legs, yet lock herself into a loo, who was targeted by a scruffy woman who tried to lure her away when she left the club.... no posting history, is a Tropic Ambassador [sic]... hmm, not so much.

But we don't know if you even have a niece, never mind one who's been jabbed in a nightclub. So why should we believe you? It's just words on a screen

Same could be said for any and every thread on here. As a pp said I have a long history of posting and I'm quite sure she's been referred to many times before.

This isn't my main posting id but I'm using this as mentioning this incident could be potentially outing as we've both posted on fb about it

It's not in the talk guidelines at all as far as I can see.

It's happening in Leeds. So many reports from this week. Girls are boycotting nightclubs here on the 27th October.

That's a campaign, not the talk guidelines.

If another woman came to me and said she'd been assaulted, spiked, raped then I'd help her and support her however she liked.

But I won't succumb to rumour and alarm spread about on the internet with no evidence.

It was mentioned in the BBC news tonight at 6pm. I would think the papers would follow suit with the story. Time for bouncers to ear h people on entry for both weapons and drugs

Having had many injections in the back over the years, they're fucking agony and this all really smacks of urban legend. Just like the "razor blades in the water slides" of the 90's.

None of the reports I've seen mention being jagged in the back and certainly my nieces wasn't her back either

(Basically, MN use their judgement and it's usually pretty good around rape apologists, given its #WeBelieveHer campaign.)

I agree with posters saying that it's appalling to terrify young women into becoming hermits for no good reason - but they ARE at risk from males. It's bloody infuriating that it's getting worse not better.

If the BBC report is itself based on or buying into an urban myth, that's shit BBC reporting and will need tackling (as ever).

Evening all - we've had rather a lot of reports about this thread. We would ask that folk have a read of our We Believe You campaign and bear this in mind when posting on the thread. Otherwise, we might have to consider taking the entire discussion down.

Thanks.

Quite a lot of the reports talk about the back, one with a photo of the "injection site" which is very obviously a regular spot.

In fact all of the photos of the "injection sites" I've seen on the internet look like nothing of the sort.

When I was at university (early 00s) the urban myth was that girls were being drugged with a medicine used to sterilise horses
It was a colourless liquid that would render you unconscious and also leave you infertile

Of course no actual drug exists but it was still reported as fact in the stupid newspaper.

One friend was at Birmingham university and swore blind it happened to her. She is of course married with several children now…

There was also a story recently in the press about criminals spraying symbols outside houses indicating they were good places for burglars to target
The actual POLICE even gave a quote saying they were sure it was a criminal code (because criminals are ever so helpful to other criminals and will definitely go around casing joints and leaving secret codes for other random criminals to cash in on)
It was then discovered a few weeks later that the symbols were from a utility company to indicate whether a pipe needed replacing or had already been recently replaced

So please don’t assume that one article, even if it has a reference to the police, means the article is true
And don’t assume that because someone thinks a heinous thing has happened to them, it actually has

Maybe cast your eyes over Myth One of the WeBelieveYou campaign? Because that’s exactly the point that the sceptics on here are making. It’s absolutely not about minimising the risks to women: quite the opposite- it’s about being realistic about what the risks really are. Surely MN is not seriously suggesting that it’s against your rules to discuss that?
