What message would you give Amanda Pritchard, new CEO of NHS England?

nettie434 · 06/08/2021 15:21

Amanda Pritchard took up her post as the Chief Exec of NHS England on 1st August. Here's a bit about her:

www.england.nhs.uk/2021/07/amanda-pritchard-appointed-nhs-chief-executive/

We have the first woman in charge of a service that is mainly staffed by women. In response to a comment from another poster about starting a thread, I wondered what messages you think she needs to hear about women's health. Obviously, anyone is welcome to refer to the situation in their own country or globally. This isn't an England only thread!!

Just to give a bit of background, I found this article which is slightly old now but gives a bit of background.

Congratulations on being the first ever female chief executive of the NHS what a great achievement.

And... Please simply be moral and ethical rather than "woke". We can't deal with anymore wokery in the NHS. It's reached peak woke. In other words please keep male patients of female wards. Let us choose the sex of our care provider. Please don't call us "cervix havers" or "people with a vagina". Just, enough of that sort of thing.

Menopause and peri menopause is being neglected, at great cost.

Please train every GP in up to date menopause care

Fund obstetric care properly so that women don't need their male partners to stay on post natal wards 24/7 and other, embarrassed, traumatised women don't have to endure loud, inconsiderate men they don't know 24/7.

Believe women/mothers.

We really do have better things to do than spend our time in a&e or drs waiting rooms. We are with our children all day every day from birth. We can't always explain it but we just know when something is wrong. Stop treating us like idiots

Woman, women, breasts, breastfeeding. No compromise.
Women to be able to choose a born female-healthcare provider.
No mixed-sex wards, single sex 'bays' aren't protections enough.

Healthcare aimed at women that informs, supports, allows women to make balanced and informed choices.

Stop 'othering' women, stop relying on trials and studies that cut female participants out altogether because of their inconvenient state of hormonal flux. Stop misusing language to erase women and their unique experience as biological women.

GPs need to have perimenopause and menopause training and be up to date on therapies on offer. I mean, only 50% of their patients will eventually go through this ...

No mixed-sex wards, under any guise. The vast majority of the population do not want this.

Please look at standard practices in other countries with regards to pain relief for IUD fitting and hysteroscopy.

Please ensure that the PPE you have (as well as being sourced from properly approved companies and not chums of Matt Hancock) actually fits women. It is the least they deserve when they have risked their lives on the frontline of the Covid response.

More money for social care
Charge people for missed appointments
Drunk tanks in A&E - people with nothing wrong with them other than they need to sober up.
Improve IT and make it link in with other services (safeguarding, police, MH)

Every single government investigation into failures in the NHS in maternity care, gynaecology, mesh or anything else has found that we need to listen to women.

The RCOG did a good bit of work, "women's voices" which doesn't seem to have been rolled out in any meaningful way.

Women are not idiots, medical misogyny is well researched, we are not hysterical.

Please allow hospitals to properly fund and organise gynae assessment / EPU. Women like me are being treated so poorly when their miscarriages are imminent. The current services are bordering on cruel.

These responses really cover so many aspects of women's lives. The message about listening to women really resonated with me. How do we ask for a webchat? A webchat with Amanda Pritchard would be amazing. Will see if I can work out how to suggest this!

Consider funding/carrying out some large-scale, national long-term studies of women from conception to whatever end point you deem fit (12 month HV check?) See the disconnect between services, the disparity between trusts in basic things, the impact of decisions on the actual patients in front of you who just want to ensure both they and their child survive the process with as little harm done as possible. See the impact of poor admin, poor support, understaffing, lack of accountability and transparency of information and care. See how dreadful postnatal care is, both on the wards and afterwards.

But also see where trusts are getting things right, actually learn from it and replicate it. And more importantly identify those whose standards are not up to scratch amd act with more force and speed to limit the impact of this.

Look at your workforce- why do they leave? It's the same as education, you can train up as many as you like but if you can't get them to stay in the job you're doing it wrong.

Why are we leaving the education of women about menopause to Davina McColl?

All women will go through the menopuase, if they live long enough. So, it strikes me as an obvious thing that there should be a central place to get evidence based information about this normal process.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/08/2021 13:18

No disrespect to Davina, by the way. Thank goodness she has the platform she has because she'll have reached tens of thousands of women.

@nettie434 I've reported the thread to ask MN to comment on the possibility of a webchat.

Single sex wards and women only services for things like breast and cervical screening, menopause and endometriosis.

It seems to me that if men got endometriosis there would be a treatment path by now Sad

From a nursing point of view - if many frontline staff are leaving, rather than just attempting to recruit more, how about making the job more life-friendly? Shift patterns for nurses are currently incompatible with normal life.

Practically every point raised is a funding issue. That's the fault of the government and the people that vote for this government.

While you're all going on about 'woke', you're completely ignorant to essential healthcare services being eroded through privatisation and insufficient funding. Please take your blinkers off, and focus on what really matters.

Dear CEO.

Keep SEX BASED services as those.Pleae don't allow the recent gender identity movement to prevent access to critical sex based services - such as cervical screening. Please out female services and needs before the wants of males that identify as women.
