The Peequal: will the new women’s urinal spell the end of queues for the ladies’?
Designed by women for women.

Not for me. Ever.

Should someone perhaps send the designers a link to this thread and the general chat thread?

Cailleach1 · 08/06/2021 11:56

Also, I suppose your clothes fall to the ground and become a sodden mess, wet and reeking of p*ss if you have to change pads or tampons. You need both your hands to do this. Very vulnerable to other people filming you while all this is happening.

Gruesome. Stupid to compare it with the way the functions of men's bodies are met. They just stand and open a zip.

Grellbunt · 08/06/2021 12:03

I suspect it is also about Covid - lots of talking about "no touch points"....

Then why no sinks?!
SoMuchForSummerLove · 08/06/2021 12:08

@Grellbunt I'm going to have a look and see if they're on Twitter and send them the link to this thread.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 08/06/2021 12:16

I once squatted in 3ft of snow by the side of a road behind a tree and I STILL wouldn't use that thing.

ChaToilLeam · 08/06/2021 12:23

Might be designed by women, but isn’t usable by so many. I would have huge concerns over privacy. And it really ignores the actual issue: why aren’t clean, safe toilets provided in adequate quantity? Why aren’t women’s needs considered to be worth meeting?

Grellbunt · 08/06/2021 12:24

Yeah - are we meant to sanitise the vag/vulva area afterwards too?!!! Honestly. Just ridiculous.

TheSockMonster · 08/06/2021 14:00

The more I think about this, the more bemused I am.

The article says McShane and Probyn reckon it’s six times quicker to use than a conventional portable loo

HOW???

What do they think women are doing in a portaloo that they can do six times faster in this? Is it just hand washing time that’s saved? In which case why not normal loos with communal handwashing area on exit? How did they get their average use time for conventional cubicles? Did they just sit outside the student union loo and time people going in and out and lump all the results in together?

And there’s an actual toilet in that tiny space? It’s a “hands-free” arrangement that the designers call a pedestal. “It’s designed like a boat to minimise splashback,” says McShane, “and also to have a little place for your clothing in front.”

Confused I think it needs a diagram…

somethinginoffensive · 08/06/2021 14:02

Excellent question.

merrymouse · 08/06/2021 14:19

I don’t understand how this is better than a maxi dress and a bucket.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 08/06/2021 14:57

A little place for your clothing...

So if I pull my jeans and knickers down to me knees...nope, I don't get it either. Why do I need a piss filled wee section to put my clothes in? If I have to take clothes fully off to pee, it'll take six times longer.

It's such a shite design, it's like they deliberately stripped out all of the norms and expected design features without a single thought as to why there were there in the first place.

Sexnotgender · 08/06/2021 20:16

A little place for your clothing in front?

So you need to take your clothes off?! I’m so confused.

TheMarzipanDildo · 08/06/2021 20:21

It’s a very ill thought through idea. Though, tbh I’ve never understood how/why men are ok with urinals either. I wouldn’t be able to go.

NotTheFunKindOfFeminist · 08/06/2021 20:32

I don't get how to use this?

But I especially don't get why the walls are only up to the waist? How does that make peeing quicker?

merrymouse · 08/06/2021 20:47

Surely there should be diagrams somewhere explaining how to use it.

Sexnotgender · 09/06/2021 07:14

I assume it’s so you can see if it’s occupied?
Grellbunt · 09/06/2021 07:40

It's to save weight

SoMuchForSummerLove · 09/06/2021 09:08

And money. Let's face it, that's what this is all about. Those in charge won't hire the necessary amount of portable loos for women because...well, because. Women's needs are an inconvenience compared to men who can and do piss anywhere.

I can see what you are saying, but if somebody tried to sell me a new concept in portaloos for either sex, but couldn’t explain how it was supposed to be used, I don’t think I’d buy it.
Grellbunt · 09/06/2021 09:19

Well, the two young women designers seem to think they know how to use it... they'll defer to them.

Agree with summerlove - and why should they bother when young women like these designers are so desperate to show that they don't really have any needs that differ from men's. Modern feminism, yay!

FemaleAndLearning · 09/06/2021 10:08

I see you have to wee facing forward which is a really unnatural position for a woman. I remember trying to wee like a boy when I was about 7 at my grandma's house. I made a bit of a mess, never tried it again!

I would rather pee behind a bush. I taught my girls to squat pee in the bath so they could wee when out and about but the peequal seems less dignified and less private.

MsFogi · 09/06/2021 10:13

It's six times quicker because 99% of women will walk in and walk out again without actually going to the loo.

TheSockMonster · 09/06/2021 11:06

The Twitter response is interesting.

Someone posted a newspaper clipping which confirms it is a squat toilet on a pedestal and that you “place your either side and squat using the bars for support”. Seems to contradict ‘no touch points’ and no comment about where clothes go.

Another person posted photos of their demo unit and I was shocked to see how tiny it is. I don’t think large people would have enough space.

I presume some sort of outer screening would be provided?

Do they not provide staff toilets at festivals?

And there is not enough space in those. You need to pop your bag etc somewhere.
