The Peequal: will the new women’s urinal spell the end of queues for the ladies’?

Not for me. Ever.

Honestly I can't see this working to reduce lineups except for the simple fact that there are more places for women to use.

When I saw it on the news I thought they look difficult to use, and yes, where is the toilet paper and hand washing facility.

I don't think our anatomy lends itself well to the "urinal" concept. I always understood that women take slightly longer because we have to undress our lower half and the dress again.

I am maybe too private about this, but I would not feel comfortable being seen from the waste up. I like a private space.

Like others have said, just put in more women's toilets. It really is ridiculous how we lineup while men march in and out.

So, they are just toilets without doors. Women don't just pull their fly down and take a penis out like men do. There is nothing special or quicker about these, except women won't have any doors.

I wouldn't use one. You're in there, open to the elements with your clothes half mast, and someone runs in and grabs you bag. You have to dress again before you can run after them.

So, a pissoir then.

Brilliant. Wonder how they came up with this ALL NEW concept.

I have actually used women's urinals, they had some at a big race I was at over a decade ago. They were in an enclosure guarded by tough looking lady security guards, and you got given a cardboard cone on the lines (I think) of the SheWee.
I.could.not.go
Literally could not, my body just went, "are you mad, this is not how we wee" and refused to let the wee out.
I had to turn round and lightly squat over it for my body to go with the flow. I think there was quite a bit of bouncing and shaking afterwards to reduce in-knicker post-wee drips.

Give me a thick bit of shrubbery and a hank of grass any time (or ideally a clean loo with bog roll, seats, doors, locks, basins, soap and paper towels... ).

Thinking about loos, I am ultra quick at home. Because it's clean so I don't have to wipe the seat. There's always loo roll, water and soap. I don't fear attack. The door shuts. There's space for my kid if needed. I think these features need adding to festival loos rather than taking away. The "posh" mobile loos you can get in trailers are always way quicker to use. Or even the eco long drop ones. I think the most delay is caused by mess and the most mess is made by hoverers but hovering on a high shelf over a massive drop into a communal cess pit probably appeals less.

I think people should sit, and take responsibility for leaving the seat clean for the next user.

Wasn't there a thread on this a couple of years ago?

It won't work, it is a rubbish idea, no one likes them.

I'm pretty sure no one wants to witness my 'putting tampon in' face.

I bought a shewee for an outdoor trip. Same bloody issue as you!

Body was like… nope! Absolutely painfully desperate for a wee. Could NOT pee standing up.

The external walls are high, it just seems to be the internal ones that are low down and only covering up to waist height.

I don’t think I’d want to use it, never the less, maybe if I was very drunk and legitimately desperate for a wee.

Report
MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 07/06/2021 18:50

Why do they need to be waist height? It doesn't save any space having your face and upper body visible. It wouldn't use much more material either.

Report
GiantToadstool · 07/06/2021 18:51

I wish they'd just address the fact women need more toilets than men ....

Report
QueenOfPain · 07/06/2021 18:51

Maybe they want to exploit the “visible from waist up” embarrassment to get people in and out quickly so nobody takes themselves in there for a leisurely dump.

Report
IrmaFayLear · 07/06/2021 18:56

Agree: if you're drunk - way-hay! Go for it! If you're stone cold sober - immediate cure for all pelvic floor problems.

I once had the misfortune to visit a French public toilet - unisex - with waist-high barn doors. I can't tell you how fast we ran out. The image of lorry drivers sitting there is ingrained on my eyeballs.

I saw this too and was not impressed. I’m sorry.. I want to wipe after I pee. And if I’m on my period then what am I supposed to do?

Part of me suspects that this isn’t actually made for women, aka females.

Is it just me - but my wee doesn't always come out in a straight line iyswim? Sometimes, especially if I've been holding it, it sort of goes sideways and not straight downwards. This has lead to some memorable moments at festivals or al fresco when I've been hovering and peed all down one leg or into a shoe (don't ask) or once, covering the back of my skirt (that was a long walk back to the car park)... So it's a no from me as well.

Not just you. One way of sometimes inducing directionality is some carefully positioned rolled up loo roll or tissue ... but seems this is a paperless facility. Confused

Even the guardian seems sceptical about this remarkable 'invention'.

They wouldn't work for me.

The article says they would have all female attendants/guards. That (plus some proper outer walls and a roof) would help, but what is the likelihood that some festivals would decide to do without them? They definitely need hand-washing facilities, and definitely need plenty of normal toilets available too for everyone who can't squat, or might need to move her bowels, or is on her period.

The Lapee ones in one of the other links did have bins in them, for tampons/pads and toilet paper, though you would probably need to bring your own paper. That fact that I could see the bins when I just happened to be waiting at the traffic lights beside this bright pink urinal show just how private it was! Oh, and it was a man who was using it at the time.

These ones don't seem to have space for bins and they don't really seem to have thought through using them. If the floor in the gents is covered in pee, at least men don't have to lower their trousers to pee. But women will need to lower their trousers, or the very popular jumpsuits, and then manage to keep them (and probably a bag as well) while still having hands free to deal with tampons etc.

And no, I don't want anyone to see my face when I'm using the toilet. But the short walls seem to be an important part of the design- you have to be able to see whether anyone is in there, as there is no door.

Not just you.. It is not uncommon for our pee stream to not be straight.

So not only will we have pee all over the place, there will be no toilet paper to wipe, and no place to wash o it hands.

I guess if you’re at a festival, then you’re probably already disgusting but why do we need to add the risk of getting dysentery to
The mix?

It’s a hard no from me.

Their website is odd. Why don't they show the urinal being used? I'd like to see how high the walls are. I'd like to see if you have to hover or squat or tilt you pelvis or whatever. Why don't they show us it in use rather than all that childish looking plastic? Doesn't have to be pics of actual women peeing, just a graphic showing how the body works with the urinal.

I can see it's on a platform so passersby won't be able to see in but even that isn't properly illustrated. Too keen on bright colours and eco cred rather than what the experience would actually be like for the user.

A TW is boasting on Twitter about chatting with the women using the Bristol one. Hmm
