Citalopram and alcohol. Anyone know?

Now before anyone says "let me google that for you" I have googled and I'm confused.

The leaflet says that it's advised not to drink whilst taking citalopram, but the NHS website says there are no adverse effects.

So which is it? Is it just that, well everyone's not advised to drink because it's a depressant?

I'm prescribed 10mg (so a low dose I think) for anxiety rather than depression if that makes a difference.

I won't drop dead will I if I have a lovely glass of wine? Will I?

I have taken citalopram for two years and am still happily drinking wine! Haven't noticed any ill effects so far.

I have taken citalopram and drunk alcohol and lived to tell the tale

I found when I started taking it it made me be sick and I didn't want to drink but after that passed I found I wanted to drink sometimes and did.

Don't worry I got pissed loads more than once while I was on Citalopram and I'm fine. I thing it's just not advised because alcohol is a depressant.

DH and my dad are both on 20mg and drink once a week without any adverse effects!

I took citalopram for years and never even thought about whether I should be drinking or not

you will be fine with some wine
without a doubt

I can tell you I drank more than that

Excellent, that's what I wanted to hear!

No bad hangovers or anything?

Doesn't go to your head too quickly? (god I really sound like I've got my priorities in the wrong order don't I?!)

I'm was on 40mg no effects

bigbrothermademechangemytights · 15/05/2010 12:59

I took citalopram and drinking gave me the worst hangovers ever in my life. Sorry to put a dampener on things. Maybe try it out the night before you can have a good lie-in if needed?

LowLevelWhinging · 15/05/2010 13:54

OK, thanks for the heads up bigbro, I will exercise some caution!

I drink and I take 10mg citalopram. No problems whatsoever. I think its just because it is an antidepressant. I asked my doctor and she said drinking in moderation whilst taking it is absolutely fine

I have drunk while on them, didnt know I wasn't meant too, but I don't drink now. Alcohol is a depressant and ime I am better without it.
