I guess I'm kind of thinking out loud.
I've just had my AD's increased to 40mg a day and I'm feeling kind of a failure that I just can't cope with the one tablet a day.

Someone slap me and tell me that I'm being stupid.

Is that FLuoxetine?

The starting dose of 20mg isn't really of much therapuetic benefit tbh. You really need at least 40 to get real effects if you are quite depressed.

I've been on 80 at times.

You are doing fine to take it - do not feel a failure!

I'm on 40mg a day. Started on 10mg, then upped to 20mg and been on 40mg for a while. I only take one tablet and one dose a day so maybe you just need to think of it differently. If it benefits you in the long term then there is no reason why you should feel like a failure. I improved massively when my dose was increased.

i am on citalopram and started on 20 mg but it started to have less effect so upped to 40mg and not bothered in the slightest, no different to having painkillers upped in my opinion, i need them to function so be it!

Docs are advised to only prescribe the minimum dose that might help to begin with. This helps minimise side effects as your body gets used to dealing with the drug. Also they may well give a placebo effect. It is normal to keep reviewing and increasing the dose until it is at a therapeutic level, ie it works.
Beating yourself up needlessly is a symptom of depression, as is feeling a failure. You are NOT doing that badly!

Thank you all.
I feel a bit better after a good nights sleep.
Stupid isn't it?
I wouldn't bat an eyelid to anyone that had to increase their pain meds for what ever reason so why do I fell so bad that I have to increase my meds just to function normally.

Hi, i also feel i ay need my AD'S increased :-( im on 20mg citalopram at the moment, but im also going through a very early miscaridge, my mood isnt so bad apat from feeling upset about the MC which is just normal, but my anxious and panicness is comming back, im not sure if this will go or will get worse :-(

Rockbird · 29/03/2010 20:46

I was on 40mg Citalopram at the height and could easily have gone on to 60mg but I felt the same as you. Silly isn't it, but if you feel you need it then take it. No prizes for suffering in silence

It's my dam hormones drive me nuts!! lol

memoo · 29/03/2010 22:57

I am now up to 60mg of citalopram, It does making you feel like you're kind of heading in the wrong direction when you should be getting better.

But Depression is an awful illnes and not something that will go away over night. Getting through it is a long and sometimes painful process and there is no shame in having to up your dose of AD's if thats what it takes to get you through

I have 10's and 20mg at home i think i might just take a extra 10. when i spoke to my doctor few months she said if i felt i needed to i could go up to 30. just a bit nervous.
