Concentrate on your breathing. Nothing else.

In - count slowly to 6

Out - count slowly to 6

In - count slowly to 6

Out - count slowly to 6

You are not having a heart attack. You will not die. Just breathe slowly.

Hold on to something. Squeeze it if that helps.

Worszel, it's the anxiety making your breathing more shallow which in turn causes all sorts of other symptoms, like tingly fingers, or pounding chest and so on. If you breathe into a paper bag, it will help you to calm down. Remember it's just the anxiety making you feel like this.

Ps.I followed your prem thread as I had a PROM too. And I suffered from panic attacks when DD got ill. I'm sure it was a throwback to the NICU/SCBU experience.

WorzselMummage · 20/03/2010 21:58

It was on the tele.. baby with a heart attack. Perfect HA fodder. I should know better.

Ffeel a bit better now. still got the adrenaline. the rushes would feel nice if it wasn't so terrifying.

that 5 in 5 out think works doesnt it

Walk away from the the room where you were stressed. Sit on the toilet if that is the calmest place. As everyone said long deep breaths. CLose your eyes if it helps. Also I know that clenching your fists while you breathe in and then let them relax as you breathe out can help.

WorzselMummage · 20/03/2010 22:00

Yea doozle mines PTSD

I don't deal well with any health related issue now.

DS had terrible gastroenteritus and now chicken pox. we've had 6 weeks of illness

Hi Worzsel, didn't realise it was PTSD. Are you having counselling for the health anxiety too?

The thing I found hard is that when they're ill, they don't sleep well and therefore you don't sleep well which makes your anxiety even worse.

And that's on top of the general worry that they're ill.

WorzselMummage · 20/03/2010 22:05

Yeha it's settling now, My heart isn't trying to escape.

Thanks ladies

6 weeks of illness is so rough too.

Also, do you find with yours being prems they're more susceptible to bugs? I lost count of the amount of anti-biotics DD had in her first two years.

WorzselMummage · 20/03/2010 22:08

I did have some councilling and it did help. I don't get the flashbacks or anything any more, they one lasted a little bit really.. i think it was my bodys way of ordering it all. Drs said PTSD but i am not sur eit was that bad.

The health anxiety is an ongoing thing though. last summer was miserable. I guess when your body fails you so completly as if does when you have a pprom prem it's hard to convince yourself it isnt going to faoil in other areaa.

They are both pretty resiliant and George is amazingly healthy normally, he's just still titchy.

We had the gastro bug which went on for an age and then i took him to the ooh dr because he's bloated at 9pm on a saturday nigth and got sennt to a&e with query a bowel blockage as he couldn't hear any bowel sounds and tbh that almost pushed me right over the edge. Then dd got chicken pox and of course gave it to DS

It is so difficult when you've been through that experience.

The only thing that worked for me was saying "It's just the panic" or "It's just the anxiety" making me feel like this, it's not actually a stroke/heart attack/other random illness.

Oh and that health anxiety website is good, if only to read about other people with the same worries.

doozle · 20/03/2010 22:16

Cross-post, oh no, the a&e experience would have been a nightmare.

WorzselMummage · 20/03/2010 22:19

I tended to avoid the HA websites tbh, i just founD other peoples worries fed my own fears, although it was helpfull to see that most HA women seem to have the same fear that I had, MS.

I used this listto talk myself down last time.

Its amazing how many different symptoms anxiety can give you isn't it.

you have to get Dr Claire Weeks Peace from Nervous Suffering and her other one - oh bugger! I cannot recall the title. Read it PLEASE - it helped me through a most hideous time of thinking i was dying/having hear attack/ had cancer/ etc. She is brilliant. Please get a copy, She has two books they are both superb. I still refer to them periodically but have been absolutely fine with the lessons she teaches.

snowkitten · 20/03/2010 22:28

I will look up the book in my bedroom and type the title in tomorrow morning. It helped me and a couple of my dear batty friends too!

doozle · 20/03/2010 22:29

No probs at all. Know how horrible it is when you're in the throes of an attack.

Glad it's a bit calmer now.

WorzselMummage · 20/03/2010 22:30
