Mirtazapine?

Has anyone had any experience of these? I have just been prescribe these by my GP to take along side citalopram and propanolol.

I feel like its an awful lot to be taking but I am feeling really bad at the moment so probably in need of it all.

Sorry for crap post, feeling very anxious and it seriously affects my ability to think straight or write.

Sorry to hear you're feeling so bad and anxious.

I am on mirtazapine 15mg.

I also used to take citalopram and propranolol as well. The propranolol doesn't really do much for your anxiety TBH, all it does is stop your heart from responding so much to adrenaline, it doesn't actually stop you feeling anxious at all. I was told by my psychiatrist in no uncertain terms "propranolol has no place in psychiatry", but perhaps you are taking it for other reasons.

Do you have difficulty sleeping at the mo? You will probably find mirtazapine will take care of that if you do. I was very sleepy when I first started taking it, sleeping about 10hrs a night! However this effect wore off after 2 weeks or so.

I have found it to be very helpful and I had none of the horrible side effects that I had with citalopram like dry mouth, tremors etc. Mirt is one of the more modern antidepressants (released in 1996 I think), so it seems to have been developed to have fewer side effects. Some people report weight gain on mirtazapine, and I was really anxious about that, but I have found this to be very minimal, maybe only a couple of pounds so don't panic about that.

Give it a go and see how you get on. It has definitely helped my mood to lift and the anxiety has lessened. I've heard it's a bummer to come off, but I've not crossed that bridge yet...

Thankyou so much for your reply. My GP has prescribe me 15mg of the mirtazapine too. The propranolol is for the aniety but I too have found that it does nothing at all really, although my GP has told me to keep taking them for the time being.

Not sure why but I feel nervous about taking the mirtazpine but your post has really reassured me. I read about the weight gain but its good to know it hasn't affected you too much.

I'm so desperate to get out from under this cloud. I just want to enjoy my children and not dread every second of every day.

hi memoo - ive been taking mirtazpine for nearly 4 yrs now - it started when i got post natal depression ,i was on 15 mg - it made such a difference i was able to sleep and it really clamed my symptoms down ,i am at 45 mg following a very hard time in my life a year ago and i am thinking about coming down slowly so eventually i can come off it - i also has the propanolol and found it didnt really do alot for me - the best thing i tried was a 6 week course of CBT therapy
took my anxiety away 80 % so now i can deal with it without reaching for the diazepam - which helped in the short term but didnt solve anything,ask your gp for a referral

I took my first dose last night and slept really well but I feel really drowsy this morning, I'm struggling to look after DD, so much so that DH is having to come home from work to help me.

Is this normal? will it wear off once the drug is in my system properly?

Hi memoo, yes that is normal. And it does wear off over time - took about 2 weeks in my case.

I found it helped to take it earlier on in the evening, say around 7pm, then I went to bed early and it had worn off a bit more by the morning.

i always take it the minute before i get in bed ,yes the sleepy feelings do go away alothough i always want to stay longer in bed !!! ,i quite liked the feeling though after being so uptight xxx
