Have posted before about my sister recently suffering from depression. She is on 10mg citalopram(sp?) and did seem to be improving. However she is still drinking, in moderation mostly. I know they say not to mix them, but anyone any idea of side effects of this.. could it be a major problem?

thanks

Hello, I have been taking Citalopram for a while - the info on the meds says to avoid alcohol but when I asked my GP she said that drinking in moderation (7-10units a week) was ok. I didn't drink for the first couple of months, and after that I had shocking hangovers even if I only drank a glass of wine so I am avoiding it as much as poss! I might be wrong but I think the only "side effect" really is that alcohol will make the medication less effective. hope this helps.

I found that drinking on a higher dose of citalopram sent me a lil' crazy, I'd get over emotional and hysterical and I just couldn't drink on 40mg. TBH this was too high a dose for me I think as I was a jibbering wreck when sober!
I've been on 10-20mg now for the past few years and drinking in moderation has been fine for me.
My doc also said this is fine and my hangovers are no different and no other side effects.
Maybe your sis should just be careful if doseage is increased at any point?
And don't drink too much!!
