Hi Mumsnet - I had been feeling extremely tired and just put it down to being a new mum. But DS was six months! So had some blood test done and was told last week that my thyroid is running very low and that I must start Thyroxin straight away. It started last Thursday and initially felt a lot better but today I have been feeling v down which is just not me and I am beginning to get v anxious about not giving the little one my best. My memory is awful too. Has anyone experienced this - feel like I'm on an emotional roller coaster and trying too hard to be the perfect mum but just feel like sleeping all the time.

not sure weather the way your feeling is connected but i had depression about the same time as i started ,never connected the 2 and am fine now..one thing you cant be perfect so just be a mum. enjoy your baby and if the dishes are still in the sink bugger it! i was a neat freak and didnt spend any time with my dds always busy and now my dd1 is nearly 16 and i think ..i wish i had soent more time playing

almostanangel · 25/05/2005 09:45

im not sure of my levals to be honest ..but i was on a higher dose 300mg! as my leval had dropped to .looking like it was on none!so am having blood test every 3 months

almostanangel · 25/05/2005 09:47

when i first was diagnosed they said my thyroid was not doing its job at all i get confused as .its 2 levals isnt it one for the thyroid hormone and one for the other thing which tells the thyroid what to do...

Pupness · 25/05/2005 09:51

I know what you mean AAA - the T4 and T3 thingy -you are right about the whole 'Monica' neat freak - there's more to life than perfectly plumped cushions! Just want to get it sorted - been told I am just under 10 per cent - so the 50mcg is probably not enough.

I'm also on it and have been for years. It does take a few weeks really for it to get into your system and have any real effect. And I can absolutely say that it can lead to feelings of depression. I went through a phase a few years back when mine was seriously out of whack and I felt lifeless for weeks. Just keep taking your tablets and you'll get there. Though, if your a new mum, it could be your maybe going through a bit of pnd?

almostanangel · 25/05/2005 09:56

oh hun for me it was because i had dieted since 8years old and kept getting stuck..so they checked it ,think i thought i would be size 12 the next day,, am constantly dieting and dr says it will not come off till the levals are right [git] never mind ...make sure you take them dont forget..and they will get your leval right really quick im sure

suzywong · 25/05/2005 10:11

I'm on it too!
I have Hashimoto's disease [smug emoticon}
Underactive Thyroid due to massive family history and I got tipped over the edge when pg with ds1 four plus years ago and wasn't diagnosed until june last year.
I thought I was jsut a tired new mum until I realised I had diminshed mental capacity and felt like sh&t all day every day, I stopped driving because I was terrified I was going to black out at the wheel and take the kdis out
.
Honestly as the others have said after a month you will feel a different woman and I know exactly what you mean about the agony of not giving your kids the best, that mademe very sad with hindsight after I got diagnosed; that I had been a walking, dim witted bad tempered zombie for over 3 years, just hope my kids don't remember it

You know the best thing is that you WILL get your life back and feel better and it will be great, - check your iron levels too

HTH

Pupness · 25/05/2005 10:12

thanks so much you two feeling better already - might go back to drs and up the dose - god giving births the easy bit - but he's worth it and from what you say, it will get sorted.

Hi pupness just wanted to agree with the others and say that it takes a while to sort it out properly and then you shoud start to feel better.

Xena · 25/05/2005 10:18

I'm on 150 mcg but they started me on 50 then quickly they put it up in 50mcg stages until it settled at 150mcg. Does anyone in your family have it? My Dad does.

suzywong · 25/05/2005 10:25

I'm on 175mcg, that's 200 one day and 150 the next, I started on 100 then went up to 150 and 200 which actually had me hyper and that wasn't very pleasant. Oddly enough my weight has hardly fluctuated at all.

If it's any consolation my doctors have told me (as has the lovley MNer JJ) that if you are going to have a chronic disease then this is the best one to have.

You will be feeling sooooo much better Pupness, it's going to be great

Pupness · 25/05/2005 10:35

suzywong - admire your honesty - was worried about going barmy bonkers and not looking after Ds properly. They should screen for such things six months after birth - I bet there are all number of new mums thinking feeling like this is completely normal. Got a family history of depression which made me even more paranoid. Thanks again

Xena - yes, my sister has it. But has no Children and always said it wasn't hereditory. But me thinks that it is.

i too have an under active thyroid
here is a list of symptoms and info

suzywong · 25/05/2005 10:40

No worries
they certainly should screen for it when women present sypmotms of PND.

It's absolutely dreadful isn't it, feeling so drained, I went on a MN meetup back in Feb last year at 10 am a few miles away and dh had to drive me, that had become normal way of life. It was horrid, but then I had another baby while I was indiagnosed and he didn't sleep throught so I just thought I was pooped all the time, although my hands used to tingle at night.

anyway enough about me you will be feeling better soon so that's all that matters

sparkly · 25/05/2005 10:43

I'm currently on 300mcg though started out on 100 and over the years it's just gone up and up. Pregnancy really took it's toll though and I was hospitalised simply because my levels were so low.

But at least you're on it now and hopefully will feel better soon.

tiffini · 25/05/2005 10:43

i still suffer with symptoms, becuase i am terrible at remembering to take the tablets, i often forget for a whole week.

I had the same trouble with the pill, that is how i ended up with twins.

I have since been sterilised, it was the safest option, otherwise i would of ended up like the old woman that lived in a shoe

Pupness · 25/05/2005 10:48

Blimey - there are a lot of you - and nobody tells you that there may be other reasons you are feeling a little off the scale. Suzywong, thanks for your kind words! I am out of bed - thanks Mumsnet!!!!!

OP posts:
suzywong · 25/05/2005 11:11

IKWYM Pupness, it's so common but never mentioned or suggested

I think one of the symptoms is wanting to slowly suffocate those who tell you you look tired and ask you why don't you get your head down for half an hour.

tiffini · 25/05/2005 11:50

what worries me is people who dont understand how an underactive thyroid can make you feel.

I am paronoid that people think I am just a lazy arse who cant cope with motherhood.

almostanangel · 25/05/2005 13:47

confession!! i felt totaly knackered last night [mind you i had had a 5 mile walk!] and then twigged dr changed my dose well over a week ago i picked up the tabs and they are still in the box ,,i had totaly forgot..bad girl slap hand!

suzywong · 25/05/2005 13:50
