Underactive Thyroid

Hi Mumsnet - I had been feeling extremely tired and just put it down to being a new mum. But DS was six months! So had some blood test done and was told last week that my thyroid is running very low and that I must start Thyroxin straight away. It started last Thursday and initially felt a lot better but today I have been feeling v down which is just not me and I am beginning to get v anxious about not giving the little one my best. My memory is awful too. Has anyone experienced this - feel like I'm on an emotional roller coaster and trying too hard to be the perfect mum but just feel like sleeping all the time.

Mads1, depression is one of the symptoms of underactive thyroid. My mum felt literally suicidal when she had undiagnosed thyroid problems
She has her dosage right now and is absolutely fine and full of energy. She's 65 and is busy travelling the world performing as a dancer with the Royal Opera!

Have underactive throid - diagnosed in preg. Take 100 units per day of thyroxine. Had a blood test last week to check the levels. Haven't felt any particular sympotoms but this time I'm not loosing the preg weight like I have with my other three kids. Could be thyroid related - will see when I get the results.

suzywong · 24/10/2005 02:57

Mads1

it could take a few months for your levels to be correct, it may take two or three more blood tests - but hang on in there because when it all comes together then it's worth it

mummyhill · 24/10/2005 07:50

hi milward, was wondewring how you were geting on with the thyroxine.

spookylips · 24/10/2005 11:06

ive just rang my docs and there is no results of under/over active thyroid. god i feel so knackered as my body is knackered and feeling heavy too. best to start on St johns Wort and see what happens..

Gud luck to everyone anyway !

mads1 · 24/10/2005 16:51

spookylips - hope you find out what it is soon. Until then hang on in there and I hope the JW helps.

Aloha - can't wait to become a dancer with the Royal Opera!!! very impressive, you must be proud!

milward · 24/10/2005 20:47

Hello mummyhill - just confirmed you as the thyroid expert on the sept thread
Hope you doing ok - I keep taking the thyroxine & hope that I can stop soon as it's not compatible with other medication I have to take twice a day. Have to juggle the times correctly to get fullbenefit of both!

dropinthe · 08/11/2005 11:23

Question for experts!

Once you have found the right dosage of Thyroxine, do you have to keep taking that forever? Does your Thyroid gland ever heal itself and start working normally without artificial hormones?

Blondeinlondon · 08/11/2005 11:32

You have to take it forever

On the plus side - you will get free prescriptions

dropinthe · 08/11/2005 16:17

! Bloody hell!

dropinthe · 15/11/2005 16:11

Anyone else found losing weight with an U/A/T almost bloody impossible?-lost half a stone but I think this is only down to excercise mainly-have really cut down on calorie intake and have halved my alcohol consumption but it is taking me bloody ages to lose even a few pounds.
Haven't been able to go to the gym for the last 2 weeks as was away for 4 days and have had a chest infection for the rest and the weight is creeping up again! Surely if my throid levels are normal then I should be able to lose weight-no??

Suzy???

Due to just having had a baby my last lot of results came back on the high side and they have reduced my dosage of thyroxine but i still can't shift the weight even though I get more exercise these days with walking to and from nursery pushing a pram with baby in it and DD on a buggy board mainly up hill.let alone the extra racing round involved in caring for 2 childrenand the diet that gts impossed on you as you never have time to eat a full meal.

mygarland · 25/11/2005 15:19

hi all, my ususal name is mygirllolipop but changed it to a christmassy one.
anyway i too am an UAT, i've had it since i was ten and worry bout dd2 too. i'm on 175mg but i haven't had a check since dd3 was born 7 1/2 months ago! i have massive family history and massive list of symptoms. i really feel for u newbies it isn't easy getting used to this when u've a new baby too. i had to get used to it whilst also being a teenager!
so anyway if any1 wants to talk or anything....

mummyhill · 26/11/2005 12:19

I wish they had diagnosed mine earlier. I have had problems since I was sixteen and didn't get a diagnosis till I was 24, even though I told them about our families history. I am currently on 125mcg next blood test due in three weeks!!! DS is 8 weeks old and is apparently fine. DD had funny result on her guthrie though and they monitored her till last year when it seemed to correct itself however I will still worry about it, I think DD is more at risk than DS though.

suzywong · 26/11/2005 12:28

hello

poor you not being diagnosed for 8 years! I thought three and a half was bad enough

Oddly weight gain was never one of my symptoms, one of the reasons I went undiagnosed for so long.

I must say I've been feeling a bit 'roidy lately, tired and tingley but have had a series of broken nights so am not too worried. Just made me remember with utter horror what every day used to be like.

mummyhill · 26/11/2005 21:41

Weight gain was one of my major symptoms. They accused (sp) me of comfort eating and treated me for depression FFS. We eventually got a new GP at the surgery who took time to listen to me with regard to what I was actually eating and the family history. I did weight watchers and put on over a stone before I got diagnosed. I was surviving (ha ha) on a packet of crisps a week because I just wasn't hungry and the weight was just pilling on. I miscarried last year and within 48 hours of this my thyroxine dosage was trebled. Since then I have gone on to have a beautiful baby boy and instead of celebrating getting back into a size 20 - 22 I am currently celebrating being able to fit into a size 16 skirt from tesco's. I hope that they keep on top of things and that by getting regular blood tests to make sure my dosage is correct, eating sensibly and exercise I may eventually reach my ideal weight of about 10 stone instead of the 14 I currently weigh.

mads1 · 03/12/2005 20:21

Just been diagnosed with PND but told I can't take AD's due to the thyroid problem any advice?

Blondeinlondon · 03/12/2005 21:28

What has the doc suggested instead of ADs?

deckthehillswithboughsofmummy · 03/12/2005 21:48

councelling!

Blondeinlondon · 03/12/2005 22:26

How do you feel?
Did he explain why you couldn't have the ADs?

Is your thyroid problem hyper or hypo?
