Underactive Thyroid

Hi Mumsnet - I had been feeling extremely tired and just put it down to being a new mum. But DS was six months! So had some blood test done and was told last week that my thyroid is running very low and that I must start Thyroxin straight away. It started last Thursday and initially felt a lot better but today I have been feeling v down which is just not me and I am beginning to get v anxious about not giving the little one my best. My memory is awful too. Has anyone experienced this - feel like I'm on an emotional roller coaster and trying too hard to be the perfect mum but just feel like sleeping all the time.

Oh,am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad Ive found this thread when I wasn't even looking for it!! I was diagnosed approx 5 weeks ago-took 100 mg for the last 4 weeks and haven't noticed any difference and levels stayed the same. Now on 150 mgs and waiting with baited breath for some change. My main sympton has been fortnightly, extremely heavy periods for over 4 months now-I had breastfed my 1.5 yaerd old youngest son until a few weeks ago and I think I have had this for a long time.I have had zero libido for over 5 years now-for no reason-I used to be a sex amniac-I fancy the pants off my husband but have hardly any desire to make love unless v drunk!!This has obvioulsy taken a BIG toll on our relationship-I have always thought this was down to hormones, maybe a lack/too much testosterone and was thinking about going to private hormone clinic to get a diagnosis but now am thinking that it could be down to the u/active thyroid.
Its so encouraging to read that other people are suffering too-my moods swing erratically and I am sometimes a complete monster to my boys for no reason other than they are being normal kids!

I have an u/active thyroid too, diagnosed 7 years ago but with symptoms 3 years before. I found it took a while to sort itself with the dosage, and mine changed after dd was born but the tablets do help.

dropinthe · 04/08/2005 21:57

Anyone else??

Dropinthecauldron · 13/10/2005 12:19

My thyroid is finally functioning normally! Hurray! Periods sorted-mood swings lessening to a degree-energy slighty up-have joined a gym to start shifting this stubborn thyroid induced weight,(who am I trying to kid!!).

150 mgs for me!!

aloha · 13/10/2005 12:55

Depression, anxiety and memory problems are all symptoms of an underactive thyroid. The medication will sort it out incredibly quickly. My mum has an underactive thyroid and felt just the same.

jabberwocky · 13/10/2005 13:24

Congrats, dropinthe! I remember when I got on my medication. My energy level was sooo much higher. I felt like I had discovered some fabulous recreational drug

Dropinthecauldron · 14/10/2005 08:55

Not quite there yet!

Sure it will get better-went to the quacks yesterday and asked her when the mood swings get better as had a really bad day-was horrible to the kids-could have, literally, bashed my head against the wall! She told me that she, more often than not, will take what the patient is telling her over what the thyroid level is telling her.I presume,by that, that she means it will take a while for things to even themselves out?

Can't wait to feel normal again!

Mads1 · 14/10/2005 22:13

Yippee!! I'm not alone!! (i mean this in the nicest way!). I found out that I have an U.A.T 4 weeks ago but my GP only put me on 25mg until I saw a consultant. I finally got to meet the consultant on Tuesday and he said my levels were so severe that he was 'surprised that i eevn made it to the consultation'!!!. Put me on 100mg straight away. I can not wait to stop feeling so tired and for my legs and arms to stop aching. I would like to send a big hug out to my fellow UAT friends (((((((((((HUG)))))))))))))))))

jabberwocky · 15/10/2005 01:21

Hang in there, it will stabilize I think my doc said it usually takes a minimum of 6 weeks, but I did start feeling better quite quickly as we were sorting out the dose. I think the longer you went undiagnosed the longer it may take to stabilize but I don't know if that's true in every case.

suzywong · 15/10/2005 07:21

just caught up with this, dropinthe, welcome back to the land of the living, it's great isn't it - good for you

Dropinthecauldron · 15/10/2005 11:39

Cheers-I do think I was not diagnosed for quite a few years actually when I think back to the symptoms-the most obvious one being the lack of libido almost straight after my wedding for no obvious reason,(was a rampant bunny before then!!).I put that down to mild depression after losing someone close but it never made any sense to my husband and I and has caused alot of arguments-even on our honeymoon!!

Dropinthecauldron · 15/10/2005 11:40

Never had the achy arms and legs though-Mads-hope they get the levels right for you too-if you ever feel like letting off steam, this thread is always in my "watched" list-I'm a good listener!

mummyhill · 15/10/2005 22:08

Yipee. Ds was born 3 weeks ago. Thyroid must be functioning fairly normaly on 150mcg/day I hardly put any weight on durring the pregnancy and am now with eating sensibly, breast feeding (a huge task initself whith thyroid problems according to my breast feeding consultant) and lots of walking each day with dd and ds, under 14 stone for the first time since my diagnosis 6 years ago. Thyroid actually went wrong 12 years ago and it took me 6 years to get them to stop treating me for depression and look for the real reason behind the problems.

Mads1 · 19/10/2005 17:06

dear dropinthe.

thanks for the support . I have actually needed to talk to someone for the last few weeks but never seem to know who to talk to. I feel that DH might not fully understand how low i feel sometimes - it's difficult cos he's not going through it. Just this morning i found myself crying whilst breastfeeding my dd cos i was not looking forward to another day in agony (welling up now!!).It's got so bad that i'm having to take paracetomol for the pains. I'm the kind of person who likes to carry on regardless cos i'd hate people to think i'm lazy. Dh keeps saying that i have to accept that i'm "poorly" but i don't see it like that. Sorry, i'm just rambling and moaning. I hope you and all the others are well or getting well!!!

Sorry for the off load . Just having a bad day!!!

May have been celebrating a bit early feeling really low not sure if it is PND or thyroid related will try and get them to run a function test for me as I feel like sh*t.

Jbck · 20/10/2005 19:19

I had Grave's disease in my early 20's, which is an Overactive thyroid condition but I now have a medically induced underactive thyroid due to Radioactive Iodine Therapy 8.5 years ago. I recognise every symptom on here & sympathise with all of you. Due to my illness DD was tested on 3 occassions other than the pin-prick as the antibody that causes Graves can cross the placenta up to several years after diagnosis, thank goodness she's fine so far. She's now 4 & occassionally I panic as she has boundless energy, eats like a horse but weighs in just under 2 stone. I still have no libido used to love it but hoy ho at least I'm not suicidal like before I was diagnosed.
I'm interested in the breastfeeding point though as I had milk for a dozen babies dut DD wouldn't do it & believe me we tried. Was it connected? Will the doctors ever know better than you how you feel? I doubt it.
Hugs to everyone who's feeling crap today & hugs to those who're not too.

mummyhill · 22/10/2005 11:43

Apparently due to the fact that your metabolism is so slow milk production can also be slow. Do't know how true this is just going on what i was told. I certainly have problems with this but wether this is due to the thyroid problem or the fact that I am exclusivley expressing as ds wouldn't latch (due to inverted nipples sorry if tmi) I don't know.

suzywong · 22/10/2005 11:48

never had a prob with milk supply here

It seems to me that there are many variations of the disorder but the one that is crippling us all is the exhaustion and zombie-ness

For those of you not on replacement therapy yet... hang on in there because once your levels are even it feels great.

spookylips · 22/10/2005 12:00

Rainbow · 22/10/2005 12:00

Sorry not read all this thread and don't have an under active thyroid myself but I could have soon (Family history big time!) Because of our history, my sister's was caghut early and shes only on 75mg, my Aunt the same. My mum is on 250mg but hers was not caught early (she didn't think of telling our doc about my grandma) She was getting up in the morning and going to sleep on the setee to get over the effort of coming down stairs. Her memory was appalling she just about remembered to collect us from school. Milk bottles would be in the cupboard and saucepans on the front door step, she put on a lot of weight and her hair was like a scarecrows. She has been diagnosed for 25 years now and her memory has improved no end (it's better than mine!) She has lost 5 stone and leads a normal life, looking after my boys while I work. It will take time to get your levels right but hang in there. xxx

spookylips · 22/10/2005 12:01

very forgetful (which i usually have a sharp memory but now i forget everything - "things to do" list)

Mads1 · 23/10/2005 21:13

I've been on 100mg for nearly two weeks and still don't feel any different. If anything I sometimes feel worse?
My symptoms are

  1. tired and aching legs ankles feet and arms
  2. aching joints esp. hips, knees
  3. tired, tired, tired tired
  4. low concentration/memory - NEVER been like this. I've always thought that i was pretty much on the ball. Now, i go to do something and within seconds forget what i was going to do!
  5. hair loss - it's frightening!!!
  6. slurred speech sometimes. i think it's related.
  7. I think i'm suffering from some form of depression. i just feel like crying all the time and i hate being me.

Anyway. can't wait to notice a difference. What if i don't feel any different soon and i remain a lazy moo forever!!!

mummyhill · 23/10/2005 23:00

No change of diet and exercise pattern and have managed to put on 3lb in a week, feeling really low how much of this is due to thyroid function and how much is PND? Am having a blood test on Friday so will hopefully find out soon. I am currently on 150mcg/day.
