Anyone suffering with depression / anxiety etc - how do you answer when people ask if you are OK?

I really struggle with this - my reaction is just say 'fine' but I know i should try and be a bit more honest but am really unsure what to say without going into chapter and verse which isn't always appropriate.

Can you please help and give me some ideas on how to explain how I feel (so people do not underestimate the illness) without going to far - particularly pertinent for when I go back to work.

Thanks

Perhaps "I'm getting there" or "On the mend"?

It depends on the relationship you have with the colleague really.

I tend to say "fine .... actually no I'm not, I'm struggling a bit at the moment" (when I am). But I am lucky in that I work with psychiatric nurses and no explanation about the illness is needed. It's much harder to know what to say to people who have no understanding or experience.
