1st time I went, my lovely GP explained that there were 3 ways to treat depression: anti-depressants, counselling and a combination of the two. After discussion, we agreed to try the counselling first. I did and, though I've since suffered 2 further bouts of depression, I've never taken ADs. Couselling has worked for me each time. I'm not saying counselling is better than ADs, just that I didn't want to take ADs and haven't had to. Some people swear by them, and that's fine too.

I didn't know I was depressed when I saw my GP, I walked in and just broke down.
he prescribed AD's as wait for counselling was a few months. I didn't go to counselling in teh end but started on the AD's later that day.
They don't kick in for awhile though, but I found they helped psychosomatically IYSWIM.

I don't want to break down as my dcs will be there, I'm feeling stronger tonight and thinking I may be able to hold it together but I do still feel that I need help right away

Oh dear, didn't want to say that you would, just that I didn't even know I was depressed until I went to GP's and left with AD's half an hour later, so they may well prescribe it for you.
Good luck, x
