heard it on local radio and it just struck me as being a perfectly rational thing, but then I've got a very chequered past as far as that sort of thing goes

Well it's not rational to feel panicked and stressed when you approach a speed camera. Just slow down FFS. So yes, I would say it was an irrational fear.
