Not sure what to ask for - been on ADs since October plus on or off them for about 6 years now. Was thinking about CBT to try to address problems with self confidence etc but now dont know what to ask for - he is very much a handout prescription kind of GP not a talking man - not sure how to start what to say - any help would be gratefully received - thanks

Tell him you feel the ADs have helped a bit but that you don't see them as helping in the long term if you don't address the underlying problem.

Say that you've read a bit about CBT and feel you would benefit from this.
If he's a non talking GP he'll be so pleased that you've suggested this that it should be easy from there.
If he tries to fob you off with waiting times etc tell him that you realise it may take a while and are prepared to wait.
You will get a lot more out of your GP if you just tell him EXACTLY what you want.
Good luck.

Sounds like you know what you want - CBT sounds a good idea, definitely worth being precise and asking for that. It helped me loads, I still use the tips and techniques it taught me and it must be at least 10 years since I saw the CBT counsellor. Hope your GP is sympathetic (and if he isnt, can you see another...?) Have to say, I had to fund mine myself since my GP practice didnt offer counselling 10 years ago, and it was expensive, but worth every penny. Good luck.
