How long before citalopram starts to work?

I was given 20mg Citalopram by my GP nearly 5 weeks ago for PND. I saw her last week and explained that it had seemed like it was starting to lift my mood within 2 weeks but then things started getting on top of me again. She advised me to stick with it for another 4 weeks before we review but now I feel nearly as bad as I did when I saw her when she prescribed then. I've been lucky enough not to have any side effects but am starting to think that they are not working. Would it be worth my while going back to see her as I don't want to go on for another 3 weeks like this as starting to feel really low. Has anybody any experiance of citalopram starting to work and then stopping again? Is it just part of how they work and will they start working again if I persist. Sorry for long post but not sure what to do.

Hello kegs82,
Not really going to be much help but wanted to know someones read your message. I went onto citalopram nearly a year ago now (gosh I didnt realise it had been so long!) I was pregnant at the time with an unplanned pregnancy with the father of my toddler. We are no longer together. I started on 10mg and have to say I noticed a difference after the first day. My problem is stress as appossed to depression. After my son was born (now 7mths) I went up to 20mg. I still get very stressed as on my own with 2 young children but feel I'd be more stressed without the citalopram. Hadnt thought that they may have stopped working. Things get on top of me still but again not in a depressed way. I had a friend on citalopram who felt it stopped working and they upped the dosage. I would go back and talk to your doctor if you dont feel right. It can take time to work but maybe you need a higher doseage. I'm not an expert or a doctor but dont suffer in silence. If you dont feel right then go back. Feeling depressed is different to stress so your doctor needs to speak to you. Good luck x
