How long did it take you to start to feel better on Citalopram?

Hi! I have been on citalopram now for 3 weeks. Was wondering how long people generally found it took for them to feel better. I know what the literature says - at least a couple of weeks, can be as much as 6 - 8 weeks, but would be interested in hearing your experiences. I was on it before 4 yrs ago, and it worked well, but I really can't remember how long it took! I do feel calmer than I was, and the edge has gone off my depression, but I still feel really low and sort of bleugh a lot at times. seem to have had a lot more SE this time too. Felt quite sick a lot, and my sleep is definately effected. These are easing though, so not too bad.
Anyway would love to hear others experiences if anyone wants to share.
Thanks.

I was prescribed citalopram almost 5 years ago now.

As I remember it took about 4 weeks to really start to kick in, but to be honest the drug on its own isn't really enough, it ought to be taken alongside a course of counselling or pyschotherapy in order to get the best benefit.

I was on it for 12 months in the end and had a 6 month psychotherapy course during the last 6 months. The combination certainly worked for me.

I would really recommend going back to your GP and asking to be referred for some sort of 'talking' therapy as a back up for the medication.

i have been on this medication for a fair few months now, i felt better immediately but that was just coz i knew i was doing something about my state of mind, realistically it took 3-4 weeks and it was just like i woke up one morning feeling amazing compared to what i was, hope you feel good soon
