What will happen next?

DH has been under a lot of stress lately. Possible redundancy hanging over us and a threat of losing the house if that was to happen.

He started acting strange weeks ago but nothing bad enough to actually say "you need help" so I never did.

Last night he cut his finger off whilst making dinner. First thought was that it was a genuine accident (he was slicing onion at the time) however it now seems that it wasn't.

He was taken in to hospital last night for the hand injury, they're now keeping him in because they're worried about his mental state.

Does anyone know what happens next? I'm so confused, frightened and fed up with everything I can't even think straight.

Sorry for the name change, didn't want my usual name to be associated with this latest episode.

How awful for you, this sounds horrendous.

He will need to be assessed by someone from psychiatric services, to determine if he is suffering for a mental illness, or if there are any other problems, or other support that he needs.
What happens after that will depend on the assessment, but could range from being transferred to a psychiatric hospital if they are very concerned about him, to seeing a psychiatrist as an outpatient, or he could be discharged back to his GP.

It might be beneficial if you are around when that assessment is done, as you may have information that could help the psychiatist to reach a decision, and also they can explain to you what they think should happen next, and why (as long as your husband agrees).
It is probably a good idea to phone the ward he is in now to find out when he will be seen, so that you can arrange to be there.

When he has been seen by the psychiatrist ,he/she or the nursing staff should tell you what they think .If they think he has a mental illness of some sort they may keep him in and they may want to ask you how he has been the last few weeks as part of the assessment.
How do you think he has been,in what way has he been strange?
