PMT - I am having my 'monster week' What can I do?

Hi, for a few years now I have been getting really bad PMT.

I only take it out on dp and am a complete bitch to him. I will ignore him, accuse him of things, talk down to him and more. I just cant help it though. He knows the reason but tells me that I can stop it.

I seem to be worse since having 5mo dd and it goes on for 1.5/2 weeks. I also get odd visions about what could happen ie dd getting hurt etc. I have learnt now that it is because of my hormones and have started to control those I think.

I am not on the pill anymore. Should I go to my gp? Is there anything else I could do. Have tried St Johns Wart but that didnt do anything. Thanks.

I would speak to your GP. When my PMT was at it's worst, we discussed using fluoxetine for part of the month to lessen the symptoms, but only got as far as vaguely talking about it then I got pregnant and have had other MH issues that mean I'm taking ADs all the time now.

not sure how it would work, as I thought you had to be on drugs like that for a few weeks before they had a therapeutic effect, but it might be worth investigating.

Is it possible that it's something more than just PMT? Certainly my depression is affected by my hormones.

CBT might help as well if you can get your GP to refer you for that.

I did wonder if I have depression but I am a lot worse before my af is due.

I might speak to my gp although he doesnt like prescribing drugs instead he will print a self help guide - He did this when I thought I had PND.

good that he doesn't just throw out drugs willy nilly, but I would definately see if he can refer you for some sort of talking therapy.

I empathise though; I can be a real bitch when I'm bad with it all. I often felt like staying away from my DP to avoid any possible conflict; not practical when you are living with someone though!

Its awful. Right now I hate him and want him out of my house. Next week though I will want to cuddle him all the time.

I dont know how he puts up with it.

Its odd that I only take it out on him. I suppose because he is here.

I used to get vitamin B6 for PMT, but tbh can't remember it making much difference. And the Pill makes things dramatically better

Simplysally · 16/11/2008 21:31

Up your intake of B6 as that helps the nervous system or try Agnus Castilus (sp) - you can get it from Holland & Barrett. Starflower oil or oil of Evening Primrose might also help but don't take all 4 together. I've not maintained my vitamin intake which might explain my mega moods the last few weeks .

Do talk to your GP or practice nurse as well though.

lauraloola · 16/11/2008 21:37

Thanks, I will have a look at those. I hate going to my gp at things like this. Maybe if I go to a female doctor this time she might take pity on me and do something.

Am with SimplySally on this one - Vitamin B6.

Since having my ds my PMT was enormous and got worse over time i.e. the last really bad one I was very depressed and a bit suicidal and then as soon as I got my period I felt fine. It's horrible, isn't it?

My sister recommended taking B6 - give it a couple of weeks to build up - and although I still get a bit irritable, it is nothing like what it was.

LouieStrumpet · 17/11/2008 16:29

Oh also get a really good brand like Solgar or something, it costs a bit more but will work better.

Our practice nurse recommended B6 (or general B complex) and starflower oil. Have been taking them for 2 months now, and it has made such a difference. My main problem was tiredness, and I'd feel like i was wading through treacle for a few days before remembering I was due on. Since I've started taking hte vitamins, my period has actually sneaked up on me, because I've not been tired!!

Acupuncture did wonders for my PMT.

Oooh thanks everyone. I am going to have a look on Holland and B in a mo.

I think I will order Vitamin b6 and have a look for Agnus Castus.

Fingers crossed it will work for me. I really couldnt do with another printed self help sheet from my gp
