counsellors/psychiatrists

Silly question, but, do these do similar jobs aiming for the same goal etc.

If not, are appointments with psychiatrists different to appointments with counsellors.

A psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in treating mental health disorders and can therefore prescribe medicine and conduct physical examinations. A counsellor is not a doctor and would only counsel you using a therapeutic model. Does that make sense?

There is another crucial difference which is that psychiatrists are scientists so their skills are not people based. Counsellors will have done courses that demand they look at themselves and will have done some personal therapy also. Psychiatrists have not had to do this.
I think hat makes a huge difference to how they approach their patients.
