How do I explain to my 8 yr old (and her friends)

why I have many many "lines" on my arms? - from extensive self harm that ended 10 years ago? Dd's never noticed until the other day outside school I was wearing a 3 quarter sleeve top and her friend asked "what are those lines on your arms" prompting 2 other friends to notice and join in. I was caught completely off guard and said "I'll tell you later we're in a rush today".
Hoped it would be forgotten but dd told me this morn that her friend had asked her and she then asked me what are they. I said I used to have a skin problem then changed the subject.
I'm really stuck here, have no idea what to say, don't want to lie to her, don't want to "give ideas" to her or her friends cos they bound to ask her again and she'll say whatever I tell her. Don't want them to pick on her for it.
Help please.....
I also have a 5 yr old dd who hasn't mentioned it at all yet. I think they see it as normal until it's pointed out to them.

I would just say it's a skin condition - you didn't say how old your dd is but I guess under ten ? You can explain later when dd is older and more able to deal with the complications of self harm.
