Adult survivors of childhood abuse. How do you cope?

My father was an alcoholic who hated me. My mother was a narcissist who didn't care about her children except one , as long as she still had my father. She was obsessed with him not leaving her, he didn't really want to be with her. She had us children to try and keep him. He didn't want us. He hit us and was downright cruel. I dont mean just a slap I mean beat us and was verbally very cruel too. We had nothing as he drank all the money. Mum had to go to work because we had no money. Father blamed us children especially me. Grew up knowing we were hated, mum gaslighted us into believing we were a normal family and other fathers were not normal. We had to lie to the schools, Dr's etc that we were all happy. People thought my mum was a saint as she put with us children. We were being beaten and bullied at home so we were nervous and a bit disruptive in school. Nothing major just very fidgety and didn't listen. Father was everyone's best friend in the pubs. Mum hit us and was verbally abusive but not as bad. They were always arguing because he wanted to leave and she didn't want him too. They'd both take it out on us kids verbally and physically. Violence didn't stop until I left home.
Put it behind me and I can function well.
However like today everything has just hit me again for no reason. All the memories, the violence and the things that were said and it's like reliving it again. It doesn't happen often but it just suddenly comes out of nowhere and I have 24-48hours where that's all I can think of . I cant sleep , I cant stop crying and I re live parts of it. I've got my life together, it was years ago . It was from as early as I can remember to when I was 17. They've never said sorry or admitted it. When I've brought it up it's basically I either shut up about it or get out. I'm very low contact with them. See them occasionally about twice a year.
Those in a similar situation what do you do ? How do you cope?

Not sure I would call what I’ve done and do coping - but here it is.

  1. went zero contact.
  2. rejoiced when they died
  3. subsequently have a three strikes and you are out rule for everything and everyone - jobs and friends. If you are struck out of my life - I stick with regardless. Boundaries are absolute. An inability to respect that will be met with indifference and quite possibly retaliation in some form. People are warned and always surprised when I follow through. Bizarre.
  4. realise yourself is the only person you can absolutely rely on in any situation. So cut your self some slack and do what makes you smile, relax, enjoy and want to wake up everyday. Build yourself a life you are happy with. It’s yours and no one else’s.

Endless therapy and no contact. I am in my 6th year now and it has helped me immensely, but I also realise I will probably never be healthy. I will probably always have episodes of ptsd and cptsd and a load of other things. I am just learning to cope better.

If you haven't already please consider having therapy or counselling; it can make a huge difference to how you live the rest of your life.

You cope by realising your parents are damaged people, and that they were damaged long before you were born. What happened to you was nothing to do with who you were then and who are now. You are not responsible or in any way to blame for their actions.

Have a look at these two videos, I think they will help you understand why you feel the the way you do;

I went zero contact at 14 I moved in with my friend and her mum adopted me I was so happy to hear they were dead it's been easier knowing their gone now and I don't have to waste time thinking about what she did I didn't go to her funeral because she doesn't deserve it I hope she's rotting in hell!

Cutting them the fuck off

Forgiving myself for my own mistakes and forgiving those who made mistakes towards me that weren't out of abject cruelty

never forgiving those who abused, harmed, bullied and raped me. Never.

Being there for my daughter. Trying every day to be kind and loving.

Sorry op - no answers, just what is getting me out of bed in the mornings

I broke the cycle of addiction and violence. I am raising a child in a calm home. I have a good job and financial stability. I know they didn’t succeed in breaking me. I win every single day

That doesn’t mean I never have moments of grief, fear or anger. It creeps up. I let myself feel it and then move on.
