I’m looking for help with Fluoextine please - it’s causing v vivid dreams and disturbing my sleep / making me feel like a log in the morning. Has anyone experienced this? I believe Fluoextine to be an activating medication but wondering should I take it at night?

Oh! Sorry, no advice from me, but you have made me realise I am an idiot.

I've been taking fluoxetine for a few months and also having very strange intense dreams and waking up exhausted. I hadn't put it together and realised the two things are connected.

I'm increasing my dosage again this week, so it'll probably get worse.

Yes a common side effect. It never went away but they are now vivid but not disturbing . I wasn't given my dosage while in hospital for something unrelated and had the most frightening hallucinations. Unfortunately they are the most tolerated for me so it's a nuisance side effect rather than serious .

Maybe try half an hour before bed as it takes a few hours to kick in so shouldn't keep you awake. Just don't lay down before the 30 minutes like I did and end up with a burnt throat for days 😅

I take it at night and have zero side effects so far (been on it for 5 weeks on 20mg)

TeenToTwenties · 16/07/2026 20:46

DD was told it has an energising effect so to take it in the morning.

DustyMaiden · 16/07/2026 20:47

I take it in the morning no problem

The vivid dreams did go. I really had to worktofet the timing of the dose right. Too late and I could not sleep, too early and I got awfully tired in the middle of the day. I think I took it late morning. But the tiredness went after a while too. They were life changing for me, absolutely worth getting through the initial side effects and the ones that did not go.

@Unmuteno worries, great that my post has connected the dots!! Good luck

Thanks everyone that’s really helpful. I think I will experiment a bit with the timing. I’ve been taking it v early morning so may try later on. I’m really struggling to get up every day!

Not from that, but another ssri gave me very vivid weird dreams. I agree with changing the time you take it and if that doesn't work you can ask to switch to something else.

Thanks for raising this . I thought I had to take it in morning so never even considered the timing . So are we saying mid morning/ lunchtime is best ?
