Does anyone else feel like their brain just refuses to start things?

Ive been noticing something about myself lately and i cant tell if its just stress or something else,There are loads of things i know i need to do during the day nothig huge but starting them feels weirdly difficult i'll sit there thinking about it,sometimes for ages and then suddenly later i can do it five minutes adn wonder why it felt so hard in the first place.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing ?🙂

Yes! Classic sign of ADHD

Engineeredit · 04/03/2026 18:37

Me. I am like this.

Yes I experience this a lot, it’s very annoying. Some things end up getting put off for weeks or even months, and then when I do get around to doing them I either wonder why it took me so long to get started because it’s not a difficult or long task, or I hate myself even more because the task has built up and takes way longer than it would have if I’d just done it right away.

Ive heard it can be to do with executive function or lack of it and could be a sign of adhd or even autism. I have wondered if I have either condition or both over the years, not just because of this one thing but for many other reasons too. But most of the time put myself down about it because I think of it as a personal failing and that I’m lazy.

I don’t think you’re lazy at all op though, this is a real thing that people struggle with. It’s just difficult to be kind to yourself sometimes.

Yep. Procrastination. I do or all the time. I am not autistic or have ADHD. I am not depressed. Sometimes I'm just a lazy bastard.

CookingFatCat · 04/03/2026 20:32

I’ve been like this my whole life! It’s a battle. The mind is willing but the flesh is weak. 🥹

I find that I keep putting stuff off for weeks and then one day I get into the zone and get it all done.

Phewgladthathasgone · 04/03/2026 20:55

Most people are like this. It doesn’t mean they have autism or ADHD

The irony is that you started two identical threads OP 🤣🤣

Or you are twice as productive as the average person ❤️

angelcake20 · 05/03/2026 18:03

Yep, my whole life. Huge mental to-do list and as usual I’m on my phone and eating. I assumed for years that I was just lazy but am beginning to think it’s ADHD.

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/03/2026 18:06

Yes all the time at work and home. Feel so much better to get it done though!

Hogwartsian · 05/03/2026 18:07

Isn't that very common? It's procrastination. Honestly Mumsnet is making me think I could be ADHD for the most normal behaviours.
