Hiya, I have been prescribed sertraline 25mg for 2 weeks before moving up to 50mg.
I am currently on day two and have had no side effects and my anxiety seems to be much better. Just wanted to see if anyone had started and not had any side effects or weather im in for a wake up call when they suddenly hit. I don't have any depression but do suffer with health anxiety. Its very on and off but when it hits its debilitating. My mind seemed quieter after a few hours of the 1st dose.
I think im looking for positive stories as all i seem to find is negativity about side effects and its worrying me they will kick it at any minute.

Hey op. No experience but the GP told me sertraline kicks in straight away and for that reason you can't miss a dose as it can have a big impact. Hope youre ok

Squiggles23 · 26/02/2026 22:40

That's great you are feeling better OP!

Dont worry about the side effects - you might not get any 🤞🏼 and if you do hopefully they will only last a week or two max.

Tedster24 · 27/02/2026 18:08

Thanks guys, day 3 has been very similar to the previous 2 with maybe a little nausea. Hopefully it stays manageable. I was imagining the absolute worse tbh!

Really pleased Tedster! X

My relative was in a really bad way with anxiety last year, started on same dose and only side effect was a little dizziness, by day 6 I could see they were working. Now on 50mg and back to normal self.

Hey, I've been on 25mg for a week now and the only side effects I've noticed are dry mouth and a bit of an iver active tummy! My mind feels alot quieter but it's actually made me feel a bit unsettled think i just need to get used to it. Hopefully when I move up to 50 it will settle x

I get the unsettled part. I sit about waiting for the anxiety to come along and ruin my day, feels very strange to feel calm so my brain wants to disrupt it. I also take weight loss injections so have spent the past 4 days getting out and about getting my steps in and exercising to try and keep my mind occupied. Having a 2 year old also helps with the keeping occupied 😂

Hi. I’ve been on 50g for just over a week now. I get the bit about waiting for the anxious thoughts to arrive. My brain is so used to feeling anxious that it’s actually overthinking and searching fir things to make me anxious, which I need therapy with.
Thats the reason I’m taking it, for intrusive thoughts ☺️

Lizzbear · 28/02/2026 09:04

Just to say I started on 50 as been on it before and may go to 100 as my anxiety this year has been obsessive.

AshHeart · 28/02/2026 09:11

I started on 50mg of Sertraline a few years ago and stayed at that dose for around 2 years. I came off it gradually by reducing the number of days I took it each week.

I had no side effects on starting but when reducing and then stopping the medication, I experienced strange "zapping" sounds in one ear. This lasted for a few weeks but then stopped.

campfirenights · 28/02/2026 15:17

I started on 50mg Sertraline a week ago and have had no side effects. I was worried this meant it wouldn’t be effective for me but having googled several trustworthy sources apparently that isn’t the case. I’m still hoping for a reduction in my anxiety but the doctor said it can take 2-4 weeks to for it to work. Fingers crossed!

Tedster24 · 02/03/2026 10:34

Well day 6 and the side effects arrived. Woke up with my heart racing and feeling sick and now I have that shaking from the inside feeling. Fingers crossed it doesnt last to many days. Hope everyone else is doing OK still!!

Sorry to hear that, op. I woke up feeling so so tired today. I do think it’s just teething problems though. While your system gets used to it. Keep us updated.

You could ask GP for prescription for propranolol, which you can take as and when needed for those physical anxiety symptoms.......the racing heart etc.

It seems to have been a 1 off hopefully. Iv had alot of anxious thoughts but thankfully no more panic as of yet. May take the whole pill and go up to 50 tomorrow so I can settle on the full dose and hopefully kick the anxiety into touch!! Thanks for the suggestion though, I will definitely bare it in mind if it happens again!

I’m just over 4 weeks on 100mg (was supposed to be 50mg as prescribed but pharmacy error!). I felt as though it helped very quickly. I am having some waves of anxiety still but not half as bad as it was. I do feel a bit fatigued sometimes though.

Sendhelp101 · 04/03/2026 21:28

Is anyone else feeling more unsettled ? I'm day 10 of 25mg and last day have been feeling really unsettled, agitated and weird feeling I can't shake. Also a persistent dull headache. I'm probably going to stay at my mums this weekend and ride it out there

Kelly06 · 05/03/2026 10:09

Hi!
I have been on 100mg sertraline and no side effects at all. Don’t worry!

Me! I'm on day 11. I did a week of 50mg and then dropped down to 25 as the side effects were killing me. I wake up around 4am frequently now and have panic spirals pretty much from then until lunchtime when things eventually calm down a bit. It's a side effect apparently and should calm down eventually but my god it's awful just feeling rattly and on edge. Along with nausea. My appetite is slowly coming back a bit though

I haven't really felt agitated. I think the anxiety being less is making me feel wierd for sure though. Feels like being on edge waiting for it. I have had the headache though. Iv found plenty of water and an afternoon nap is helping. I have taken a couple of weeks off work whilst I adjust so maybe you could try that?

The agitation has gone luckily only lasted a couple of days but still feel a bit off and poorly. I've taken an annual leave day today but may have to speak to my work and let them know if i need time off ! X

Im now about 6 weeks in and on 50mg. Still have bad days but it's overall better. Does anyone else notice the anxiety is generally less but when it comes it comes harder and faster then before? It thankfully also passes quicker but when it hits im literally paralysed by it now and just sit and stare into space silently til it passes. Im finding the attacks more difficult to deal with but I don't know if it's just because it's changed and I was used to it before?

I’ve just stumbled across this thread.
My child has been diagnosed with anxiety and the medics are considering starting sertraline. He tells me he has a horrendous feeling and it makes him very agitated, I’m struggling to help him. Can any of you describe what having anxiety is like please? He’s young and can’t put it into words

I think it may be different for everyone but for me it comes like a punch in the face, ill be feeling a little unsettled and have something playing on my mind then all of a sudden my body will start tingling and my heart will race and I will feel really scared ( I have health anxiety) so I will be absolutely convinced im having a heart attack despite having no actual symptoms and despite reassurance from anyone around. The rational part of my brain knows im not but in the moment that rational side does not work. I tell myself its anxiety, it will pass, just ride it out but can't overcome the fear. It will peak and then the thought and the fear will subside but then you still feel edgy thinking it's going to happen again.
I find distraction helps im 38 so obviously don't have screen time limits but I flick through tiktok as the fast pace of the videos seems to distract my brain and it calms down.
Engaging with the world whilst it's happening is also really tough so they may go quiet as they try to process the thoughts and the panic.

That’s really helpful, thank you.
I’m sorry you’re struggling and I hope things get easier for you soon
