Hello lovlies
Anyone on here taking Citalopram or ever?
Anxiety / panic attacks
So cut a long storey short I'd been suffering Anxiety majority of this year.
Sudden severe panic attacks a few months ago, very scary!
Had an mri scan & heart monitor as convinced it was serious
Anyway doing okay but definitely struggling still especially with going out.
Ive become quite house bound & little things start me off with the awful feelings.
I'm currently on a small dose Amitriptyline for sleep & pain but nothing for Anxiety
Doctor has given me Citalopram daily to start 5mg then 10mg
I also have propranolol but not tried either

I haven't taken it myself but a good friend was given it mainly for panic during perimenopause and it was very affective, has kept her pretty level. Good luck ,I hope it helps x

I take 20mgs citalopram a day, apart from needing more sleep, it has worked absolute wonders for me. It does take a bit of time to start working so stick with it.

I took citalopram for 3 years for depression. It saved my life, got me back on an even keel and I slowly weaned myself off it (over about 8 months)

it took the physical heart-ache pain of depression away, no long term side effects and if I was in the same situation again, I’d take it again.

when coming off it, I could gradually feel myself getting more anxious the longer I had between doses, but I was able to work through that.

I was on citalopram for nearly 10 years and was a huge game changer. It totally saved my life.

The best piece of advise I was given is that it might get worse before I gets better BUT just cling on through that and it WILL get better.

Out of interest why do you feel HRT wasn’t helpful?

SkyWalrus · 28/12/2025 20:05

I had clinical depression around 15 years ago and took citalopram for around 18 months - it was fantastic. It gave me the boost I needed to make positive changes in my life and I have not needed medication since. Worth a try, I’d say. Good luck!

@TheMentalMentalLoad
I tried patches & gel.
Estrogen made me feel awful.
Actually gave me enhanced panic attacks.
My Estrogen appeared high on bloods too but believe maybe I'm early peri

I've been on citalopram for just over a year. Started at 20mg and now take 40mg a day. Originally prescribed to help with night sweats from peri but the reduction in anxiety has been marvellous. Had a bit of dry mouth at the start but no side effects after about 10 days. I'm also on HRT oestrogen spray, oestrogen pessary ( due to needing a wee constantly and didn't realise that was also peri, it's helped loads) and utrogestan every night.
