If I disclose to my therapist that I’m self harming what will happen?

Just started weekly phone calls with an NHS counsellor to help me cope with my sons’ illness. However I’ve been self harming on and off. If I’m honest and tell them what will happen? Will they think I’m an unfit mother? Will they think I might hurt my son? Will they report it?

They won’t think you are an unfit mother OP. They won’t be shocked or surprised as SH is quite common. I expect they will give you strategies to try to manage your emotions so you can reduce and stop SH

Nothing much. They’ll just try to help you find alternatives x

Sorry it may not be what you want to hear but there are situations where they might need to tell someone else. They might report it if they think it is putting your child at risk of harm eg if your child is witnessing the self harm or if you could be at risk of suicide. They might also mention it to your GP in case you need extra support with your mental health or you have injuries that require attention.

Nothing usually. They talk to you about it, establish whether you're a suicide risk and go from there.
