Scared to Start Escitalopram — Need Some Reassurance! 😟

I’ve just been prescribed Escitalopram for anxiety, but I’m feeling a bit unsure about starting it and would really appreciate hearing others’ experiences.

I had an eating disorder years ago (fully recovered now), but I’m still quite sensitive about weight gain. It’s something that could really throw me off. Did you notice any changes in that area?

I’ve also heard the first few weeks can be tough — tiredness, dizziness, increased anxiety, maybe even struggling to drive? That’s a bit scary, especially since life’s really busy right now with work and kids. Part of me wonders if I should wait… but is there ever a perfect time?

Would love to hear how you found the early days and any tips that helped.

Thanks so much 💛

How many mg have you been prescribed?

I started Escitalopram a few months ago. Started on 5mg, it took the edge off my anxiety. Then moved onto 10mg and feel much more "level headed" and positive generally. I had zero nasty side effects, although every now and again I feel a tiny "brain zap" which I've never really experienced before. Very minor though. On the whole I'm so glad I took the plunge and did it. It's got rid of my day to day stressing and anxiety around what others might consider to be stupid things. I also don't spiral and stress before bigger events or things which I used to do a lot.

Prior to this I tried Sertraline, but almost instantly had weird horrible side effects so ditched it very quickly. Escitalopram has been a life saver for me.

Also, take them before bed of you're worried about driving and drowsiness. I take mine with a glass of water before going to sleep so if any side effects happen in the first few hours - I have no idea!

And sorry, last one, zero weight gain. I was concerned about this as I'm entering my 40s but it's been fine.

I've recently started on 10mg. Zero side effects or weight gain. Also zero benefit, but I'm hoping that will come once I increase my dose!

these are reassuring to read. I've been prescribed 10mg. The doctor wanted to give me 20mg but I asked for 10mg. (My anxiety isnt that severe I don't think). But perhaps I'll start with 5mg and go up to 10mg
