Insomnia

I'm not really sure where to post but the confluence of ADHd, perimenopause and anxiety is a special kind of hell.

Crippling anxious feelings, cold hard insomnia, and the inability to switch off. :(

I hear you. I’m replying past 2.00am. Under a lot of strain. Procrastinating is crippling. It’s like I can’t get motivated until the 11th hour and the panic and need to meet deadlines overrides feelings of depression where I just can’t move.

I don’t know the answer . I have cut down work but clearly need to stop altogether. Plus in the sandwich between elderly mother and adult kids needing support . One diagnosed with additional needs (who is the easier) the other is going through a tough time buying a house undiagnosed ND

I’m sorry you are struggling OP. Do you have anyone to talk to?
I struggle to sleep and use a Snoozeband. I think Amazon make a version. I have a mixture of my own playlists and there are some Mindful Mixes etc on BBC Sounds.

I’ve had terrible insomnia in the past. Now I alternate between taking promethazine, piriton, and a mixture of valerian and melatonin. It’s worked for me and was probably the difference between me being able to carry on as normal or having to quit my job.

How are you doing OP? Any break through? Hope you've found something that helps.

How long has it been? 12 days? 12 days of absolute hell. I wish I could say I knew where the issues started and stopped.

My coach recommended magnesium glycinate 300mg so am giving that a whirl.

Magnesium won’t work for insomnia been taking it for years as was advised to by my GP but it made my insomnia worse.

BretonStripe · 07/10/2025 22:36

I'm so sorry to hear that @MyPinkTraybake 😔 What have you tried so far for the insomnia? What is your GP doing? I've suffered in the past so got full bloods done to check no underlying health conditions. I was on sleeping tablets on/off for a couple of years and realised stress and anxiety were my biggest problems. I got referred onto the NHS Sleep Station programme for free, and honestly it was amazing. You have to commit to it for a few months, and change didn't happen quickly. But this was 2.5 years ago and I'm pleased to say a lot of the tools really help me today (practising good sleep hygiene, no caffeine after 3pm, deep breathing, only going to bed to sleep etc).

I'm also concentrating on my health lately, so mostly eating whole foods, drinking peppermint tea, cut right back on booze (sleep is always better when I'm in a sober period), try and do 5-10,000 steps a day, taking lots of supplements etc (I also take magnesium at night to help. Consistency is important with supplements).

So sorry you're struggling so much 😔

NHS access to Sleepstation

Sleepstation helps people sleep better without pills. Sleepstation is an approved NHS service, available on the NHS in the UK since 2012.

They don't have sleep station in my area. I've been using the magnesium and it's been amazing. I feel tired within 10 mins of getting into bed. I'm able to just stop and sleep a bit better. TBH it's not really falling asleep that's the issue - once I'm in bed eyes shut mostly I'm asleep in 10-15 mins. It's actually getting into bed and turning lights off that the biggest step.
