Not in my experience, but I will say if you’re monitoring your speech a lot, you might me noticing changes that aren’t obvious to other people.

Anxiety is horrid. Can you re-direct your thoughts when you catch yourself focusing on your speech?

It's not your tongue, it's your mind focussing furiously on your speech and finding fault where there is none. When it's looking for something to worry about, in a misguided attempt to keep you safe, the mind can persuade the body of all sorts of things.

This video is proof of how easy the mind can create sensations where none can possibly exist:

This was one of the things I noticed in early perimenopause and it went away once I’d started HRT.

i develop a lisp when I’m tired or depressed, agree that it can be a hyper fixation on speech.

@Bladderpoolah ok I did see sometimes stress can give the sensation too. I do feel like it comes and goes throughout the day..it must be a mixture of things maybe

Yes, I have had this experience. I remember being very self-conscious about this a few times in my teens and early adulthood - scared people would think I was drunk. At the time I felt that it was due to social anxiety.

More recently, as an after effect of trauma, I have had a few occasions when (in a state of high anxiety and recalling the trauma) my ability to get words through my throat just evaporated altogether. It was like my throat had clamped shut and my vocal chords were literally paralysed. It affected me in some of my psychotherapy sessions.

I speculated that it was caused by the flight/fight/etc hormones that drown us in times of crisis, or in the traumatic memory of crisis. There must have been occasions in our evolutionary history when silence, rather than, say, screaming or running, was essential to our survival. So our body has the capacity to enforce silence.

So annoying! I get it though, as soon as you notice something your mind gets hyper focused on it. Damn anxiety!!

@ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird god its so hard! You feel calm and you think you have it under control and you still experience symptoms and subconsciously be monitoring things..how did you get over the speech monitoring? Did you also feel lispy but wasnt to other people?😂sounds mad when you write it down
