Mirtazapine - experiences anyone?

I am in a lot of pain and have suffered some life crises and sad events and at times I am quite depressed.

My GP put me on Mirtazapine 30mg. Because I am very sensitive to may drugs I took one quarter of a tablet as a starting point. It has taken 48 hours for me to properly wake up and be stable on my feet. I was out for the count. I have therefore taken no more.

I am aware the it is a funny drug with a paradoxical effect where sometimes a higher dose is less sedating, but I feel very nervous of taking the full dose after the effects of a quarter! Or indeed of taking any more at all.

I have heart problems which limit what I can take without disturbing my faulty rhythm.

The surgery is very casual about the care of patients (I am on other meds which should have regular blood tests but they never happen) and I was disappointed that such a prescription was not given with a follow-up appointment to see how I was responding.

Is anyone else on this drug? Does it help?

I've been prescribed mirtazapine as a sleep aid. I take half a tablet a hour before bed and I've found it really helpful. I wake up normally and life is so much better if you get a good night's sleep. My mild anxiety has also improved. The tablets are tiny and I just about manage to cut one in half it must have been very tricky to cut a quarter.

Gosh that sounds extreme. My only side effects are extreme hunger (15mg).
