What sort of problem are you looking to tackle @bornagineapig ? I wouldn't be able to help with specific recommendations but can maybe suggest some organisations to look at and some tips of what to look for?

bornagineapig · 07/08/2025 21:51

Thank you both. My child is having problems with anxiety and depression, mainly related to difficulties with social interactions and identity

@bornagineapig just checking, has neurodiversity ever been mentioned or considered?

bornagineapig · 07/08/2025 21:55

we are also waiting on a neurodiversity assessment so yes could be a factor

@bornagineapig I think under those circumstances id look for a clinical psychologist (may also be practitioner psychologist on some registers). They'll have training in CBT plus at least one other therapy as well as training on neurodiversity. CBT is the NICE recommended first intervention for anx and depression. They should also be able to work with more complexity such as identity and if they specialise with children should be used to working systemically so including the family unit in understanding and working with the difficulties. You can have a look at the BPS register for clin psychs in your area, but make sure they're registered with the HCPC and have completed the doctorate in clin psych. Some older clin psychs may not have the doctorate but they'll be in the minority now. I've added the link to the register for you to have a look. Good luck!

Depending how bad the depression is, and if they don't get on with CBT, the NICE recommendation also suggests psychoanalytic psychotherapy, so check out the ACP
