Someone in hospital with mental health issues are entitled to an Independent Mental Health Advocate. They can apply themselves or ask a hospital professional to do so on their behalf.

Thank you. I would like an independent advocate. Can you recommend an organisation please?

If the person is detained under the MentalHealth Act they are entitled by statute to an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA). The Ward staff will know which organisation has the contract to provide IMHAs at the hospital and know how to refer. Otherwise Mind or Rethink have advice lines.

This information from Mind includes more information. There should be some posters on on the ward as well.

There should be a notice board displayed in the ward with details of advocacy or ask the ward staff.

Are you on a section? If so you have a right to an advocate.

It's also worth contacting a MHA solicitor if you are on a section. - you can request that the ward staff do this for you or you could just Google MHA solicitors near me & contact one yourself. Even if you don't intend to appeal the section they can go through your rights & check that the MHA has been applied correctly.
