Tics waking/ scaring baby

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with Tourette’s, age 37 but have had several tics (blinking, making faces, clearing throat) all my life. I’ve been in denial about it until the last few years when it got progressively worse, I was able to hide it in my 20’s and my tics were not that bothersome or noticeable. I don’t know why they got worse in my 30’s.

I recently had a baby and I have an awful sniffing tic where I snort really loudly, it’s waking the baby and when I do it while she is awake, she jumps and cries. I feel so bad. I read that magnesium can help so started a few weeks ago but nothing has improved. I went to therapy before (HRT) it helped but the tics came back gradually after I finished. Has anyone else had this experience? I’m breastfeeding so don’t think I can take medication. I am going to see a neurologist in
june so maybe they can advise. I also have developed a motor tic where I strain my shoulders, it really hurts from doing this all day. I wish I could just suppress them better like I did when younger.

I'm sorry to hear that your tics are currently waking your baby but I'm sure that, in time, she'll become used to them and they won't give her a shock. Just like they eventually get used to doorbells, phones ringing, etc.

Thanks, it’s been 4 months and she hasn’t. I also don’t want her copying me. I just wish I could get rid of them
or have better self control to suppress them. I used to be able to do this better.
