does anyone have experience of this happening. If so have you changed to another antidepressant successfully. Was this a direct switch or cross taper thanks

Hi,
I saw this earlier and I just noticed you still haven’t got any replies.
I have not experienced this but I have been on ADs a long time.
Have you spoken to your doctor? What about an increase in the dosage ?

SolielMoonSky · 14/04/2025 20:29

Also, which AD is it, if you don’t mind me asking?

amigagal · 14/04/2025 20:31

How long is long term? Do you need to go up a dose rather than swap to a new one?

mugglewump · 14/04/2025 20:33

Doesn't the body's intolerance rise so you have to increase the dose? This is what happened to me DH on Citalopram.

Hi all thanks for replying. I have been on Paroxetine for 25 years which has been increased twice in the last 4 months but there hasn’t been any improvement. I was wondering if anyone had managed to swap to a different antidepressant successfully

Has anything happened in your life to make things worse? If you are having a stressful time then it's not the anti-D that has stopped working. Menopause tends to make MH wobbly too.

IncognitoBurrito · 15/04/2025 08:17

Yes. This happened to me with sertraline. I was on it for years and it stopped working. I was swapped to fluoxetine and have been on this for years with no issues. It’s a known thing that happens with antidepressants- called ‘poop out’.
There will definitely be something else that works for you.
Also, like pp said - HRT can do wonders. I got to a point in perimenopause when my antidepressants weren’t working so well and oestrogen has made a massive difference.

ive had anxiety and now depression for 5 months now. I’m 51 and hrt doesn’t make any difference to this. I’m waiting for a call from my GP so I’m hoping this can be swapped to another antidepressant. Thanks for your replies

I’m bipolar and having a depressant episode, the psychiatrist told me that the poop out theory is a myth

Kiwirose · 15/04/2025 22:09

Yes this happened to me after taking sertraline for years. The psychiatrist said that this dies indeed happen sometimes when people have been on medication for a long time. I am on venlofaxine now and feel really well but had to come down with one drug and then titrate up the other. Please see your Dr - there is hope. Good luck. Kx

My GP has changed my medication now so fingers crossed I will hopefully start to improve
