Counselling ...... how much does it cost ?

Can anyone give me any idea how much it costs to see a counseller or other related people ( notice clever ploy to avoid difficult spellings!). Ive been wondering about seeing someone for a while and would like to know how much it costs per session . Dont think GP would be willing to stump up for me as im just a bit crap as opposed to really in need

Hi there. I paid £40 per hour. Make sure you get the right counsellor and it is someone you can talk to easily. I couldn't gel with my first counsellor but then swapped and it was much better. Hope everything goes well.

thanks for that ,dont want to pry but did you go for something specific or general crapness like myself ? how many sessions did it take and how often did you go?

I just went to see a counsellor for my daughter - had an initial meeting and was told it would be £75 for an hour. Personally I find that too much and it is upsetting to think that so many people cannot afford counselling. Sorry that is not very helpful OP. I had counselling years ago and it was about £30 it did help to talk to someone, made me feel happier and understood. It depends very much on your problem and the counsellor's experience to know if it would help.

£40 per hour. I've booked a 'block' of 6 sessions and I'll re-evaluate after that.

The going rate where I am (SE) is £50 to £70 for a 50/minute hour. It is sometimes cheaper if you can do daytime appointments. A lot of therapists also offer a small number of concessionary/reduced rate appointments, for clients on low wages/benefits, etc.

I paid £45 per hour last year.

Some will offer low rate for low earners also

I pay £45 an hour and I think she charges £30 for half an hour, but you can't really get much done in half an hour

I'm in London. I pay £40 a session, which is his lower rate and £20 lower than his normal charge as I'm still a student at the moment.

Mine is £50 an hour but when looking for people (in London) I found them charging between £40 and £120 per hour (£120!!!! ffs)

We paid £70 per 50 minute hour in central London for ds. Currently we are looking for someone else but it's hard to know who pick.

If you go to your g.p you may be able to b referred to the listening post or similar. It's a charity that offers counselling. I go once a week and they charge twenty pounds.

I have generally paid around £50 an hour. I think it is worth really thinking about what you are going for and what you want to achieve before choosing someone. Often differant peaple will specialise in different areas or differant types of counselling so worth doing some research.

For example I have had counselling through a charity that focused on a specific illness that was super for that area, but not for my general stuff. Also had CBT from a really great practitioner who specialised in it (not just some one who did a short course and has a script) when I became very anxious and isolated and that really helped with management of that. I am now just about to start with a psychotherapist who focuses on long term work because it really is time I took a long hard look at myself and where all my issues come from so I can deal with them properly.

Before I started focusing more on what I wanted in that moment when choosing counselling I had a lot of failed experiences as I was just going to a generic "counsellor" person hoping they would fix me. Not all counselling is the same and choosing the right one for you at that time is really important in my view as well as recognising that your needs might change and therefore what sort of counsellor you need may also change.
