Hello,
Just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for online therapy.
I have googled and there are a couple, betterhelp seems to want a weekly running subscription which is a lot to sign up to if it then isn't the right thing for me.
I have previously had counselling through the NHS and I know you can self refer.
But was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations of how to find someone, preferably to do over video chat such as Teams as I can't drive at the moment

You can search on Counselling Directory by postcode Smile

Then you can read their bios and see what they offer/fees etc

Disaster2025 · 15/02/2025 18:38

Thank you, that sounds great!

Have a good look at the negative reviews for Betterhelp before going with them. From what I've heard, they make you pay monthly without guaranteeing that you'll get a certain number of sessions, and they have an online platform for the sessions which doesn't always work. Some of the therapists are demoralised by the whole setup and so are not very committed. From what I've heard, Betterhelp is better at marketing than providing therapy.

What sort of therapy are you looking for? X

I came here to ask this question so it was helpful to see this post!

Not to hijack the post but hopefully it will help the OP also - how do you choose a counsellor? Know they will be right for you? It feels like a minefield!

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I read through a lot of the local bios on the website mentioned before, and contacted one that talked to me the most. She is calling me for an intro today and will then go from there. I guess if we don't "gel" I will contact another

I know that sounds a bit wishy washy but there is a lot of detail on the profiles and some will align with how you think / what you are experiencing and some won't.

@BountifulPantry I don't know to be honest, I am going through a recent discovery of infidelity and need some support with that

I'm glad you have taken the next step. I feel a bit nervous about it so would love to hear how you get on if you don't mind sharing.

I recommend you do some research about the different types of therapy, what they look like and their outcomes.

But I understand it can be overwhelming and you might just need to start somewhere.

No, that isn't wishy washy, its the best way to do it. You have to shop around if you don't click with the first person.

I found my therapist on counselling directory too. I tried a couple of others before him but didn't get on with them that well. Ironically, the therapist I ended up sticking with is the one who I thought was unlikely to work out. He required a bit of house training 😂 but honestly is one of the best decisions I ever made.

How did your initial chat go?

Disaster2025 · 20/02/2025 12:48

It was good actually - we talked for about 15 mins about things over the last few years for me (I have had a rough few years generally including PND) and what I wanted support with now. She was empathetic and understanding and I found her easy to talk to, so we have our first session on Monday. Doing this in person but she does online too so will see.
Have you managed to find anyone you think you might want to speak to @Ruby0707 ?

That sounds really positive. I hope it works out and you get something from it.

I haven't found anyone yet, I have looked and saved a couple of therapists but haven't quite taken that leap yet. I'm not sure why I'm holding back.

It's hard! And I was really nervous, and I will be before my session as well. Talking about my feelings does not come naturally. But it will be worth it. I'm sure you can do it 😊

Talking about feelings does not come naturally to me either - that's exactly it and probably part of the problem to be honest 😂

I can recommend you Adam Nanayakkara. He is great, is focused on practical steps, not just talk. He let me book a single session online to see if we clicked. Adam never pressured me into a weekly contract. He fits my needs
