Adding numbers in head

Just that. It’s usually if I’m in the car and I ‘add’ the numbers on the car registration, or walking the dog and find myself ‘counting to 100’ then once I reach that number, restart again.
Recently it does seem to happen more and more. Why do I do this? How do I stop it? Advice welcome,,thank you.

Maybe it's become a habit? Stop as soon as you catch yourself doing it and distract yourself by doing/ thinking something else

Why does it bother you? Do you really need to stop. Maybe your brain likes having something to do. Have you tried ed refocusing to something else? Maybe planning what you will have for dinner, plans for the weekend/something else you would be happier thinking about.

I used to count the cutlery as I took it out of the basket. Just a quirk
