Anyone on fluoxetine? Please help

Hi, I started 20mg of fluoxetine on 13th December, it caused a horrible side effect of increased anxiety for a good few weeks.
A month later, on the 13th January I increased to 30mg, the side effects have started again, and I just feel so anxious, I've taken other antidepressants in the past- paroxetine and sertraline, and the side effects weren't going on for this long.
So, anyone who's on fluoxetine, did you get more side effects when increasing your dosage? If so, when did you start to feel better??

I used to take it as a teenager and would get jaw clenching & dopeyness as a side effect when starting it or increasing the dosage, which would last about a fortnight.

If you're struggling with the side effects then I would say contact your gp, especially if you think there's any chance they could put you at risk.

Thank you for your reply. I've been in touch with my GP and should hear from them tomorrow, I'm just worried about having to start all over again on a new antidepressant, I'm desperate for these to work

I do understand, it can take a few attempts to find the right anti depressants for you but when you do it makes such a difference. I know how hard it is though when needing them to work, you'll get there. I'm glad you're speaking to your gp tomorrow - hold fast x

@dontforgettofloss hi, ive been om fluoxetine now for nearly 6 weeks. 4 at 20mg & 2 at 40mg.
My anxiety has ramped up & i am so exhausted! I think my mood has lifted maybe but just worried these arent going to work for me. How are you now?

dontforgettofloss · 14/05/2025 18:08

hi @Kimmyleanne I’m now six months in on 60mg, it’s not been easy, but I’m feeling a lot more settled now, I didn’t have an easy time 3 months in due to a traumatic time, but that’s over now. I’m hoping I continue to improve, and I hope you do too.
youve only been on the 40mg for two weeks, so the side effects start again, well they did for me anyway with every dosage increase. Just be kind to yourself and give it a few more weeks, and be sure to contact your GP if things don’t improve xx

@dontforgettofloss thank you! I am hoping i dont need to increase anymore than the 40mg. Its just the anxiety & the thoughts that come with them that trouble me.

Glad to hear you are on the other side of it now! They seem to take a while to settle by the sounds of things. Xx
