Can anyone share their experience of getting life insurance and critical illness cover when you've got a history of and current mental health problems? I am having difficulty getting cover even though I've never been sectioned/admitted to hospital.

Hi OP, have you spoken with an adviser who has access to the whole market? If not I would recommend to, use an independent one, they are usually free.

It is possible to get cover but it’s unlikely to cover any existing issues, so you’d be able to get both policies but they would exclude mental health.

Hi I had to go through a broke for "special cases" due to a bipolar diagnosis.
They found me two companies one was ok price but quite a lot more than my partner for the same cover and no mental illness. The other company was nearly double this price. I am with Aviva.
It was quite a long process as I had to detail all of the my episodes for over 10 years. What was good about Aviva was that they didn't need details of suicidal thoughts and self harm. I self harmed quite a bit as a teenager and hasn't for 10+ years but some companies held this against me. Aviva said this is part of the bipolar diagnosis and didn't need details

At the point of getting the cover I had never had an admission etc. I have had the cover for 7 years and have just kept with the same company. I found the process difficult and traumatic I can't bare to go through it again. The special cases company was brilliant but some of the other more mainstream sites made me feel like my life wasn't worth insuring.
My gp had to write a report i had the option of viewing it but decided I didn't want to. I had found it hard enough to list all of my experiences and reliving my worst days
