Accidentally took double dose of sertraline - will I be OK?

I only started on sertraline 5 days ago and went straight in at 50mg. Had a bit of nausea and headache but not too bad. I accidentally took two doses today. I took it as normal at 11am and then later thought I had forgotten to take it (long story) so took another one at 5pm so I've had 100mg today.

Am I likely to experience any issues having gone up dose so fast? I'm worried about serotonin syndrome.

I had a look online and it seems that quite a few people have done this with no ill effects but they had all been on sertraline for longer than I have.

Yeah you’ll be fine but you might not sleep well tonight!

So far it's been making me sleepy so maybe it will knock me out?!

OP, sertraline brain fog is real, I use those old person daily pill holders to avoid missing or doubling up doses.

Foxgloverr · 20/01/2025 21:44

I did! 🤣 But DD borrowed it and lost the Tuesday out if it so I doubled up the Monday. Took my normal dose this morning and then noticed this afternoon there were still pills in the Monday box so took them again. Remembered 10 minutes later that Monday has a double dose in! I suppose I'd better get a new pill box.

You will be fine. I take 200 a day x

You’ll be absolutely fine OP, try not to worry. I worked in a psychiatric hospital pharmacy department and this will do you no harm. I would recommend a new pill box though!

CrowleyKitten · 20/01/2025 23:23

you should be fine. you might feel a bit off, but nothing major. adjusting to Sertraline is a tough one anyway, I don't think an accidental miss or accidental extra are going to drastically affect that.

You should call 111 for advice. It will probably be fine but be prepared for feeling more anxious or suicidal. Make sure you have someone with you. Serotonin syndrome is unpleasant but rare.

I've done this before on the same dosage, was absolutely fine, just a bit insomnia-tic that night!

Called 111 at the time as well who confirmed it was all ok as I was still within the maximum prescribed dosage which from memory is 200mg?? I might be wrong on that

Foxgloverr · 21/01/2025 09:34

Well I had a good night's sleep although woke up quite early. Feel maybe a bit more anxious than normal but my anxiety goes up and down anyway so hard to tell. Thanks for the reassurance!
